For the second time in as many days, lifeguards issued a shark advisory Aug. 30 after a hammerhead was spotted about two miles from La Jolla Shores, the same area in which a hammerhead was seen the afternoon of Aug. 29. A kayak fisherman told lifeguards that Aug. 30’s hammerhead swam by him and followed him as he paddled toward shore, prompting him to wave down a rescue boat and point to a man swimming nearby. The shark swam by the swimmer and then suddenly disappeared. Lifeguards warned beachgoers of the Aug. 30 sighting but didn’t prevent anyone from swimming. A hammerhead shark was also seen on Aug. 29 off La Jolla Shores, about 1 p.m. Lifeguards said the Aug. 29 sighting was closer to shore prompting them to close down beaches between La Jolla Cove and Scripps Pier. Lifeguards were to search the ocean off La Jolla Shores for sharks the morning of Aug. 31. Beachgoers and fishermen in North County said they saw what appeared to be a great white shark off the Oceanside Pier Beach in mid-July. There have been only 32 reported hammerhead shark attacks on humans since scientists began keeping records in the 1950s. Hammerheads are said to be some of the least aggressive sharks, but lifeguards said that the animal in the Aug. 29 sighting was behaving in an aggressive manner.
