La Jolla will be flooded Sunday morning — flooded with runners. An estimated 6,500 runners will trek from Del Mar to La Jolla Cove this weekend in the 29th annual La Jolla Half Marathon. The race starts at 7:30 a.m. at the Del Mar Fairgrounds and the awards ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. in the cove. At the ceremony, medals will be awarded to the top five males and females in each of the 13 age divisions. Last year, Nazario Romero of Escondido was the top male finisher with a time of 1 hour, 10 minutes and 23.1 seconds. Hilary Corno of San Diego was the fastest female, finishing at a time of 1:27:10.8. All proceeds from the race benefit programs at the La Jolla Kiwanis Club. The La Jolla Half Marathon is the Kiwanis Club’s main fundraiser for the entire year. Space is still available in the half marathon’s companion race, the La Jolla Shores 5K. That race is open to 2,000 competitors and starts at 7:30 a.m. along La Jolla Shores Drive and also finishes at La Jolla Cove. From 7:30 to 11 a.m., local drivers are urged to avoid the race routes, including N. Torrey Pines Road and La Jolla Shores Drive from its start all the way into the cove.
