Volunteers needed for graffiti clean up in Pacific Beach

The Pacific Beach Town Council’s Graffiti Clean-Up will take place 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 2, and volunteers are needed. Each year, more than a thousand graffiti tags are removed from the community.
“We have all the clean-up supplies, all we need is the people,” according to Adam Meyer, vice president of the town council and a member of the committee organizing the event. “Each team of volunteers gets a bucket full of graffiti removers, paper towels, gloves and even some paint for covering up graffiti that can’t be removed.”
“Each team also receives training and a map that pinpoints graffiti that needs to be eliminated,” said committee member Jim Menders. “Throughout April we’ve been surveying the community taking note of graffiti.”
During the event last year, San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman said, “The cleanup not only makes the community look nice but safer too. If you think about it, we’re the ambassadors to the tourists who visit San Diego and make a stop in PB.” PB Presbyterian Church helped launch the Clean-Up in 2007 and has been hosting the event ever since. Volunteers meet behind the church, at 1675 Garnet Ave. Volunteers should wear close-toed shoes and old clothes because they might get a few paint spots on them. Students can earn community service hours. Contact PBTC for more information at (858) 483-6666 or [email protected].
