Point Loma’s Pointers completed an undefeated run in the 37th annual Montgomery Holiday Classic tournament this week when they defeated Morse High to win the event’s championship.
The Pointers outscored the Tigers 55-46 Monday evening to cap a perfect run through the tournament that began Dec. 26 at the South Bay school.
In their first game, the Pointers ran Madison High off the court in a 79-44 blowout. This was followed by a 69-40 win over Monsignor McCoy High from Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada and a narrow 45-43 victory over the host Aztecs.
The closest teams to the Pointers in the tournament were Morse, Montgomery, and Eastlake, all of whom finished with 3-1 records.
The Pointers are currently riding a five-game winning streak after defeating San Dieguito Academy 54-42 Dec. 21.
These five W’s improve the Pointers to 9-7 on the season as they await the beginning of league play when school resumes next week. That record puts them close to the top of their Eastern League opponents including San Diego (8-4), Scripps Ranch (7-6) and Lincoln (4-6).
Head coach Josh Aros has four of his five starters from last year returning along with a talented roster from top to bottom that he hopes will add a league championship to his team’s list of accomplishments.
