The La Jolla Symphony & Chorus has been at what it does for 60 years this year, so you know it’s got the experience factor down to a science, whether the fare is from the classical repertoire or the modern corpus. Accordingly, it’s presenting an eclectic concert themed “The Nature of Things” on May Saturday and Sunday, May 2 and 3, guest conducted by Christopher Rountree (pictured), who blends new music, classical repertoire, performance art and pop. Leonard Bernstein’s “Jeremiah” symphony, Yeung-ping Chen’s “The Moon in La Jolla” and some surprisingly modern Charles Ives anchor the bill. The group’s 110-person orchestra and 130-person chorus perform groundbreaking orchestral and choral music along with traditional favorites from the classical repertoire. Now, during the 60th season, maestro Steven Schick shares the podium with choral director David Chase, performing works by Beethoven, Ives, Mahler, Nielsen and more. A pre-concert lecture by the conductor is offered one hour prior to concert times. THE NATURE OF THINGS: Saturday and Sunday, May 2 and 3, UCSD’s Mandeville Auditorium, $15-$29.
