Tomoe Gozen, a real-life female samurai, can tell you all about it. Her heartbreaking tales of love, loss and conflict in 12th-century Japan are saved for posterity in an ancient text belonging to the failing mom of two daughters on different paths. As the girls decipher the text’s message, their conflicts resolve, turning their deep differences into assets and uniting amid the heartbreak of the old warrior woman. Even cooler is that the story, “Sisters of Heart and Snow,” is written by Margaret Dilloway, a San Diego Writers Ink instructor who’s just signed a two-book deal for a middle-grade fantasy series, to be published in June of 2016.
