About 40 La Jolla High School students gathered at the corner of Fay Avenue and Nautilus Street before morning classes on April 1 in support of the “Conquer the Cuts” fundraising campaign to raise community awareness and monetary donations for the school, which is being affected by the San Diego Unified School District’s budget cuts. Holding banners, waving and cheering to passing motorists, the spirited gathering garnered lots of support — and honks — from people in passing cars. “We are trying to raise $200,000 by April 30 to minimize the possible pink slipping of five teachers and two counselors,” said fundraising co-chair Dana Irwin. The fundraiser has collected more than $125,000 since March 1 through alumni donations and events. “It’s great to see the students, many of whom are graduating seniors, so involved with this,” said Irwin.
