World music is indeed just that – the artistic anchor on an earth that often seems less a world than a fortress. Even so, Djoko Walujo Wimboprasetyo, master performer and composer of Javanese classical music, was honored by the Center for World Music during an Indonesian Sunset Recital Saturday, Oct. 10 outside La Jolla Cove’s Pantal Inn. The event featured traditional gamelan gadhon chamber music, a form of royal Indonesian chamber music performed. For the past 10 years, Wimboprasetyo has provided educational opportunities for the children of San Diego by teaching weekly classes in Javanese classical music at the Museum School and Canyon Crest Academy. The Center for World Music is a nonprofit organization fostering intercultural awareness and understanding through encounters with the world’s performing arts traditions. It sponsors educational outreach, performances and cultural programs abroad. To learn more, visit centerforworldmusic.org or call (619) 363-3007.
