Portugal-born filmmaker Joana Bastos (pictured) has an eye – or, rather, a body – for fashion. She showed as much with ‘Pure Essence,’ her movie on womanhood and the sensuousness of body art, at the 2014 La Jolla International Fashion Film Festival; she’ll reportedly take on a major presence as well at this year’s installment, which features a colossal look at clothing, its hottest designers and its latest trends as the niche world of couture takes on a life of its own in film. The sixth annual festival, called the Cannes of the fashion film industry, is set for Friday and Saturday, July 24 and 25, at La Jolla’s Sherwood Auditorium, 700 Prospect St.; check ljifff.com, this paper and sdnews.com for updates as opening night nears. San Diego Community Newspaper Group is the festival’s only local print media partner.
