An estimated crowd of 1,400 floaters took to Sail Bay for Floatopia on Saturday, July 17. Lifeguard Lt. Andy Lerum said the relatively small turnout made the floating party manageable. “It wasn’t as big as people anticipated,” Lerum said. Of the 1,400 total, Lerum estimated that approximately 400 were floating at any given time. Eight city lifeguards staffed the event on the sand and in the water in addition to two rescue boats and lifeguards on Jet Skis monitoring the event. Lerum said lifeguards made a total of four medical aids and four rescues during the event. “Lifeguards and police both took a proactive approach to engage with people throughout the event and get their compliance with just being responsible, and that went a long way,” Lerum said.
