DOWNTOWN — Dignitaries, including Mayor Jerry Sanders, State Sen. Christine Kehoe and Joan and Dr. Irwin Jacobs, attended the groundbreaking of San Diego’s New Central Library this morning, July 28, at 330 Park Blvd. When finished, the library will house more than 400 computer work stations, a 76,00-square-foot charter school and multiple community gathering spaces. The nine-story, 295,000-square-foot structure — designed by Rob Wellington Quigley, FAIA and Tucker Sadler & Associates — will have bay view terraces, roof gardens and a natural-lit public reading area. The project is estimated to cost $185 million and is projected to be completed in 2013.
