The WindanSea Historical Surfriding Association luau and reunion event on Sept. 9 featured a big south swell, which gave surfers at WindanSea plenty of opportunities to go for some gymnastic off-the-top moves. The event this year honored Al Nelson, a long-time area surfer. Members of the musical group "Ohana Poakahi" or "Monday Night Family" entertained attendees. The family of departed, legendary La Jolla surfer Butch Van Artsdalen gathered with one of Butch’s boards. He was known in the 1960s as the original "Mr. Pipeline" for his riding skill at that dangerous surf break in Hawaii of the same name.
