A roundup of news and notes from schools in the Pacific Beach/Mission Bay areas:
Don’t miss the final performance of the Mission Bay High “Dance Showcase.” This dance performance features a wide variety of dance with hip-hop, ballroom, jazz and modern selections, along with a couple solo tap and lyrical student-choreographed pieces. There are also some 1920s-, 1930s- and 1940s-inspired pieces, as well as a re-creation of the classic ending from the movie “Dirty Dancing.” The showcase takes in the MBHS auditorium  on Wednesday, June 1 at 6:30 p.m. and Thursday, June 2 at 10:45 a.m. Tickets are $5 per person at the door. The next MBHS Proposition S whole site modernization (WSM) and stadium upgrades meeting will be Wednesday, June 1 at 6 p.m. in the MBHS library. The final renderings for the WSM plans and update on the stadium renovation will be presented. The Mission Bay High School Buc Excellence Awards for ninth, tenth and eleventh grades will be on Friday, June 3 at 2:30 p.m. in the auditorium. Students will be recognized for outstanding achievement in their individual academic courses. The MBHS Senior Recognition Awards for excellence in academics, sports and leadership will be Tuesday, June 7 at 6 p.m. Organization and college scholarship recipients will also be recognized at this event. Congratulations to Director John O’Donnell and the Pacific Beach Middle School Concert Band and Beginning Strings Ensemble! Both groups received the silver rating at the Forum Music Festival in Orange County last weekend. Outstanding individual performance awards went to Devery Worsham on the double bass and Pricilla Tamborini on the alto sax. PBMS eighth-graders returned from their East Coast trip on Saturday. The students visited Washington, D.C., New York City, Philadelphia and Boston. This educational, fun-filled adventure expanded their classroom lessons with valuable real-life experiences rich in historical significance. From June 1 to June 3, 64 Pacific Beach Middle School seventh-graders will attend a three-day, two-night science excursion to Fox Landing on Catalina Island through the Catalina Island Marine Institute (CIMI). Students will experience marine life directly by kayaking, snorkeling, hiking and attending science labs led by CIMI scientists. Pacific Beach Middle School is having its year-end International Baccalaureate Excellence Awards ceremony for sixth- and seventh-graders on June 7 at 7:30 a.m. to recognize students who are excelling in academics and citizenship. The eighth grade IB recognition awards will be June 8 at 6 p.m. in the school auditorium. The Pacific Beach Elementary School Variety Show will be Friday, May 27, at 6 p.m. in the auditorium. Pacific Beach Elementary’s second annual Book Sale takes place June 4 at 8 a.m. at 1234 Tourmaline St. (front lawn area). Stock up for summer. Lots of adult and children’s books at great prices. Large assortment of  VHS, DVDs and CDs also available.  All proceeds benefit Pacific Beach Elementary School. Passport to the Far East is a big success at Kate Sessions Elementary. The auction committee reports that the fundraiser brought in nearly $23,000 for the Friends of Kate Sessions. This money will be used to support art, library and music programs next year. Thanks, once again, to all who attended, to those who organized the event, and to the individuals and businesses for the fantastic donations. Kate Sessions Elementary fifth-graders will perform “Joust” in this year’s annual musical. The performance will be Thursday, June 2 at 7 p.m. in the school auditorium.
