Bishop’s girls soccer crowned in Coastal South

With the CIF playoffs right around the corner, several local scholastic soccer teams are kicking it into high gear. On the girls side, The Bishop’s School under head coach Brian Quinn headed into play this week with a record of 10-4-3, riding a seven-game unbeaten streak in the process. Bishop’s posted its 10th win of the season last Friday with a 5-0 shutout over rival La Jolla Country Day School. Bishop’s, which won the Coastal League South for the third consecutive year, has been led recently by Stevie Griglak, who has five goals in the current unbeaten streak — from a defensive position. Kaylie Davidson has been strong in creating chances and scoring goals, while goalie Devan Osegueda has five shutouts in the last seven games. “I have been very pleased with the progress the team has made because they continually play good soccer and the other coaches have commented on how well they play together,” Quinn remarked. “We are now preparing for the playoffs, and hopefully if we do well, we will get an invitation to the CIF Southern California Regional playoffs.” In other action, La Jolla and University City battled to a 2-2 tie in Western League action last Friday. On the boys side, La Jolla Country Day School under head coach Jerry Fleischhacker rebounded from a tough 2-1 loss (LJCD goal by Rodrigo Cuenca) last week to Canyon Crest Academy to post a 1-0 win over rival Bishop’s last Friday afternoon. The win put the Torreys right back in the Coastal South race. La Jolla Country Day dominated possession throughout the game and did not permit Bishop’s any really good scoring opportunities, according to Fleischhacker. Nevertheless, Bishop’s strong defense and goalkeeper kept theTorreys off the scoreboard until Alex Fleischhacker converted a great set-up from Alex Poyhonen early in the second half.   “This was a true team effort, as all of the players were inspired after losing the first meeting between the two teams,” Fleischhacker noted. Zach Wolfenzon, who moved to midfield for this game on his own request, had an outstanding game, as did two other midfielders, Poyhonen and Kees Thompson, according to Fleischhacker.   “The entire defense, led by Danny Rogers and Lee Klitzner, entirely shut down Bishop’s offense,” Fleischhacker said. Mical Bailey earned the shutout in goal for the Torreys.
