La Jolla squares off at Petco Park

It was an unfortunate time for their bats to go silent April 19, but the experience of playing in Petco Park will remain a lifetime memory for the La Jolla Vikings baseball team. On a warm afternoon, the Vikings managed only two hits during their Western League match with Point Loma. A sizable contingent of fans traveled downtown, witnessing their team drop a 1-0 decision to the Pointers. The loss drops La Jolla to 12-8 overall and 2-2 (third place) in the league. Going into the contest, head coach Gary Frank’s Vikings were averaging 4.9 runs per outing. Point Loma managed only four hits. The Pointer run came in the second inning when the Vikings walked a Pointer hitter who came around to score later on a single. The game was a battle of pitchers for both teams, with batters grounding out or flying out to outfielders who gloved every ball, despite the glaring sun. Several Viking blasts momentarily appeared headed for outfield gaps. Senior Patrick Dayton started on the mound for La Jolla, going three innings before turning the game over to senior Tyson Youngs for the final three. Dayton walked three and struck out two in facing 13 hitters. Youngs issued one walk while facing 12 batters. Each yielded two hits. Offensively, Youngs and junior Brett Volger each had singles, with Youngs’ steal of second base the closest the Vikings came to scoring. The Vikings and Pointers played a rematch April 25 in La Jolla. Remaining LJHS Western League games include: • May 2: At Madison • May 6: Madison at LJHS • May 7: University City at LJHS • May 9: At University City The first pitch is at 3:30 p.m. On May 14, the “Battle of La Jolla” takes place when LJ Country Day visits Muirlands Field for a 4 p.m. close to the regular season.
