Longboard Luau cancer fundraiser at Scripps
The 20th annual Luau & Longboard Invitational, which has raised more than $6 million to fund cancer research and patient care at UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center since 1994, will be Sunday, Aug. 18 from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Advancements in early detection and new treatments over the past decade have been able to reduce the number of deaths annually from cancer by 16 percent. However, much work remains to be done as cancer is still the second-leading cause of death in the United States.
Viewing is free for the Longboard Invitational surf competition starting at 7 a.m. which pits company-sponsored teams of four paired with longboard legends against one another.
The surf competition is followed by the luau fundraiser which includes live music, Polynesian dancers and live and silent auctions featuring one-of-a-kind surfboards, memorabilia and trips.
Luau fundraiser tickets are $150.

For movie lovers, there’s no shortage of events in San Diego to get their film fix. Apart from regular movie theaters, San Diegans have film festivals covering every genre, specialty movie houses for those that want a bit of art culture with their film and theaters that cater to moviegoers’ every whim. One La Jolla tradition is eagerly awaited all year by locals, but beware — it comes and goes in the blink of an eye. If you’ve missed The Athenaeum’s popular film and wine series, “Flicks on the Bricks,” so far, you have one chance left to catch the series in its seventh year. Guests gather on the Athenaeum’s outdoor patio for screenings of classic cinemas al fresco and delightful summer wine pairings selected by Barbara Baxter. Guests must be 21 years or older to attend. On Thursday, Aug. 22 at 7:30 p.m. the series will feature “The Big Easy” (1986). Dennis Quaid stars as a tough, fast-talking New Orleans police detective who isn’t above accepting free meals from all-too-obliging restaurants. Ellen Barkin stars as a pretty, sexually repressed assistant district attorney, assigned to investigate police corruption. The film screening will be paired with Big Easy red malbec and Bawdy Bubbles King Creole Surprise.

The next community happy hour hosted by Bird Rock Community Council (BRCC) will be Tuesday, Aug. 20 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Lupi Restaurant, 5518 La Jolla Blvd.
The public is welcome to join with the community planning group to celebrate the end of the summer in an informal meet-and-greet at one of Bird Rock’s finest restaurants. It’s a great way to meet new friends and support local merchants.
