Janelle Ayres receives $1M from W. M. Keck Foundation A Salk scientist who studies infectious diseases received a grant to investigate new approaches to tackle deadly bacterial and viral infections. 
Associate professor Janelle Ayres is the recipient of a $1 million grant from the W. M. Keck Foundation to study new ways to treat deadly infections including sepsis and the flu, both of which require novel therapies beyond antibiotics and antivirals to effectively combat the disease. 
“Humanity is engaged in an escalating arms race with superbugs,” says Salk president Rusty Gage. “With antimicrobial resistance on the rise, Janelle’s groundbreaking work offers a shining ray of hope that effective new solutions for fighting infectious diseases are on the horizon.”
As a member of Salk’s NOMIS Center for Immunobiology and Microbial Pathogenesis, Ayres works at the intersection of immunology, metabolism and microbiology, studying how our bodies stay healthy during infections. She takes an innovative approach grounded in mathematical and evolutionary predictions to understand how bacteria have evolved ways to promote our health. She uses these discoveries to develop new therapies for treating diseases.

“Create a California Native Garden: Ready-Set-Go!”
On Saturday, Sept. 8 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. everyone is invited to join the California Native Plant Society-San Diego Chapter for a special day of speaker presentations from experts in the field of California native gardening. Whether you have been inspired to plant your first native garden or already have an established garden, this workshop will offer solid insight into getting it right. The workshop will be located at 8596 La Jolla Shores Drive.
Classes in the workshop include: • Designing a California Native Plant Garden: Exposure, soils, drainage, landscaping, aesthetics. • Plant Selection: Finding specific native plants for your climate and particular garden environment.
• Planting, Watering, and Mulching: A panel will explain the techniques and answer questions. • Maintenance and Evaluation: Pruning, weed and pest control, what is going right or going wrong.
The keynote address will be delivered by Mike Evans, founder of Tree of Life Nursery. Expert speakers across the day are Clayton Tschudy, Dennis Mudd, Lucy Warren, and Greg Rubin. Esteemed panelists are Mike Gonzales, Lee Gordon, Diane Kennedy, and Don Rideout.

The UC San Diego Board of Trustees are unique ambassadors who dedicate their time and talents to supporting the university’s continued growth. This year, eight trustees will join the 2018-19 UC San Diego Foundation Board.
The foundation is governed by 43 trustees who serve to connect the campus with the community. Comprised of local, regional, national and international leaders and alumni, the board helps inspire and encourage philanthropic investment in UC San Diego. The foundation also has 37 esteemed trustee emeriti that continue with the board in an advisory capacity.
Trustees play an integral role in fulfilling the Campaign for UC San Diego, a historic $2 billion fundraising campaign to transform the student experience, the campus and ultimately humanity itself. Private gifts to the university are accepted, administered and invested by the foundation, managed as endowments or funds available for current expenditure. As of June 30, the total assets managed by the UC San Diego Foundation were approximately $1 billion.
