AROUND THE BLOCK: The Village is home to a wide-ranging Prospect

The Village block segment beginning and ending on Ivanhoe Avenue and forming a big loop encompassing Prospect Street and Roslyn Lane is rife with top-shelf restaurants, art galleries and boutiques, for which La Jolla is renowned. Longtime mainstays dot the block, like George’s at the Cove, at 1250 Prospect, as well as new restaurants joining the mix, like Duke’s La Jolla, at 1216 Prospect, about to open in the remodeled space once occupied by Top of the Cove. In between, there are other great eatery choices, like The Hake, at 1250 Prospect, B-10, and Donovan’s Steak and Chop House, at 1250 Prospect, which moved to the address in January. Prospect is truly a restaurant row, featuring CrabCatcher, at 1298 Prospect, 3-A, and Eddie V’s, at 1270 Prospect, with its observation deck, Mosher Point. But lesser known are all the mom-and-pop shops on the landscape, several of which are in the International Shops in the corridor between 1237 Prospect culminating at Roslyn Lane. Two such small businesses in the International Shops are Jewels by the Sea, in Suite B, and San Diego Fly Rides electric bikes. “I’ve been here 13 years, and that says something,” said Linda Ronelle Jalving, proprietor and a certified gemologist at Jewels, which sells jewelry, much of which is designed and made by local artists. “I have something for tourists and locals, a little something for everyone.” Noting hers is a one-person outfit, Ronelle Jalving added it’s great to work in a place with so many international clientele as well as being a block off the ocean. “I swim at the Cove before I come to work,” she noted. Ike Fazzio, owner of San Diego Fly Rides at the other end of the International Shops corridor, noted his business is in a good spot in “a good little community.” “San Diego Fly Rides is San Diego’s oldest electric bike shop, offering guided tours, rentals, sales and service,” said Fazzio. “Electric bikes complement the La Jolla lifestyle with the ability to tap into a quiet electric motor and cruise up Mt. Soledad and Muirlands with ease and fun. We also have a number of customers who use them around town instead of driving, as they will save you time, money and parking headaches, as well as getting some light fitness in to boot. Come down and try one out, and you’ll be amazed at just how awesome an electric bike is.” Find out more at sandiegoflyrides.com or call (619) 888-3878. Other eateries in the International Shops include La Dolce Vita Ristorante and Deli-icious. Also in the International Shops in Suite V is Jonty Jacobs Purveyor of Fine Beef Products. “Just in time for the holiday season, SoCal now has it’s first traditional, custom Biltong shop called Jonty Jacobs,” said spokesperson Camran St. Luce. “The store is the owner’s second national store. The first opened in NYC last summer to rave reviews, offering the usual South African snacks, drinks and fresh meat an ex-pat needs. The store specializes in providing freshly cut Biltong made to the customer’s specifications. For more information, call (858) 750-2501 or visit .jontyjacobs.com. And if a beauty boutique is what you seek, you’ll also find it soon in the International Shops at Vanity Belle Beauty Boutique, at 1237 Prospect, Ste. U. “Vanity Belle Beauty Boutique is a brand-new boutique salon opening (this month) in the International Shops right in the heart of La Jolla,” said spokeswoman Victoria Nino. “They offer an intimate, private setting where you can relax and enjoy your beauty services. Although the boutique may be on the smaller side, the service menu certainly isn’t. Vanity Belle offers all kinds of pampering for all types of events. They specialize in special events and bridal services but also offer hair coloring, blowouts, makeup, mini-facials, waxing and more. And they serve champagne mimosas while you get dolled up.”
For more information call 858-876-5776 or visit www.thevanitybelle.com.
Stepping out on Prospect and rounding the corner, visitors will come to Lik La Jolla, which has been located at 1205 Prospect, Ste. C, for eight years, showcasing fine-art photography. “In November 2007,” the gallery says, “Peter Lik launched one of his longest-running and most successful galleries, appropriately nestled among the cultural art scene near La Jolla Cove. Designed by the master photographer himself, Lik La Jolla showcases his award-wining landscape photography, displayed against vast, neutral-toned walls and beautiful hardwood floors. Visitors marvel at masterworks such as “Coastal Dreams,” Peter’s stunning take on Scripps Pier at sunset.” In celebration of the gallery’s eight-year anniversary, a public event is set for Saturday, Nov. 7 featuring the unveiling of Peter’s latest collection, “Equation of Time.” For more information, call (858) 200-0990, email [email protected] or visit lik.com/galleries/lajolla.htm. Another art gallery in this block section, with a somewhat different perspective, is Africa and Beyond, at 1250 Prospect near George’s and Donovan’s. “Situated in La Jolla for 26 years, the gallery offers the finest collection of traditional and contemporary art offerings, everything from contemporary crafts purchased from the trade co-operatives to the most superb and rare ceremonial objects — and more jewelry than ever before,” says the gallery in its promotional literature. “The diverse cultural arts of Africa are represented in many unique forms at Africa and Beyond, where Africa’s extraordinary artistic achievements are showcased with an array of one-of-a-kind pieces. You can be assured of the highest quality at exceptional prices.” The gallery notes that its owners, Ian Allen and wife Julie, both of whom were born and raised in Africa, travel back there each year to hand select exotic treasures for their gallery. “Africa and Beyond makes shopping for art an adventure,” the literature says, “and is not to be missed.” For more information, call (858) 454-9983 or visit africaandbeyond.com. And don’t miss Legends Gallery La Jolla, near Lik at 1205 Prospect, Ste. B, sporting a Seuss sculpture in front of the gallery. Then there is Covo Home, at 1298 Prospect St., Coast Walk, on the top floor next to the elevator.
“Covo Home brings luxury global-chic to Prospect Street, offering unique handmade gifts and home decor from France, Bali, Africa and India plus artwork by local San Diego artists,” said the company in its literature.
And located in an indistinct office next to Westime of La Jolla (a showroom of high-end designer watches at 1227 Prospect) is TAG, at 1227 Prospect, Ste. 200. Inside, on the second floor, sits an office space with close to 40 employees, rows of desks and computers, a beautiful patio with ocean views and underground parking. “You have reached TAG,” notes the company in its literature, “one of the first outsourced accounting firms in San Diego. Founded in 1996, TAG started as The Accounting Group, headquartered in La Jolla, and now with multiple offices throughout Southern California. TAG provides outsourced accounting to businesses and personal accounting services to high-net-worth individuals with TAG Family CFO. Serving over 400 business clients and families, TAG also offers software solutions, including Sage Construction Software and NetSuite.”
For more information on TAG services, visit the website at teamtag.net or call (858) 454-5693.
Other businesses in this block section include but are not limited to: H. Moradi Fine Jewelers, Daniel L. Jewelry, Blue Jeans and Bikinis, Robina, Alpaca Collections, Shiku Sushi Bar, The Classic Touch, P.S. Platinum Property, Simple, Peets Coffee & Tea, Turquoise Lady, Blue Apparel, Mosaic Designs, Danny Kadoori, The Shot Bar At Body Blu, C.A.D Interior Design, Picasso Fine Tailoring, Prospect Rug Gallery, Gallerie D’art, Eyestructure and Mila Fashions for Women.
