Although a prominent artist to emerge from Britain in the ’80s, it’s ironic that Peter Murphy has been heard by more people in his cover version of John Lennon’s “Instant Karma” in a Chase bank commercial than with his seminal band Bauhaus. Currently on a “Secret Cover” tour, Murphy will dig deep into his catalog for this set to include such Bauhaus classics as “She’s In Parties.” Fans will also enjoy a live romp through classic songs that have influenced him, including tracks from Bowie and Joy Division. While Murphy’s star may have faded a bit, he remains a riveting live performer and still possesses one of the most distinctive and commanding voices ever recorded. A Joey Harris show is rarely less than a party, but when the gig is being held to celebrate the release of his second solo album in 25 years, expect the festivities to get loud and boisterous. Not that Harris has been slacking for the past few decades. Stints with John Stewart, The Beat Farmers and The Snuggle Bunnies, among others, have kept him busy. Now it’s time to showcase his own material, and he’s bringing along a slew of major musical guests to help, including Mojo Nixon, Caren Campbell and Paul “Hollywood Hills” Kamanski. If you’re a fan of roots rock, this is easily the show of the month. Joey Harris & The Mentals: Sunday, June 14, 5 p.m., Brick By Brick, 1130 Buenos Ave.; 21 and up; $5. Blues lovers should be sure to check out Mystery Train’s regular Monday night jam sessions at O’Connell’s. More than just a cover band, the quartet has released three albums to date, chock-full of terrific originals that can stand alongside vintage classics. For the purposes of this jam, the band is adept at performing any number of well- known tunes, from “Wang Dang Doodle” to “I’ve Got My Mojo Working,” giving players excellent backing for their stage turns. However, Mystery Train is at its best when the band plays its own songs, bringing new magic to an old art form. If it’s true that the best band names leave the actual music played open to conjecture, than the five musicians in Guava Belly have chosen well. Though the name gives no indication of their musical leanings, the band falls loosely into the jam band category, excelling at mid-tempo acoustic rock shuffles perfect for any beach party. What sets the group apart, however, are the soulful vocals of frontman Dan Hammer, particularly effective when the group cuts loose on tunes such as “Buena Vista.” His deft lyrical stance mixes politics with a good- time feel. It all adds up to an excellent group that can get you thinking or dancing, depending on your mood. Guava Belly: Wednesday, Friday, June 19, 6 p.m., PB Bar & Grill, 860 Garnet Ave.; 21 and up; no cover. One of the greatest success stories to rise out of San Diego’s club scene in the nineties, Unwritten Law continues to go from strength to strength. Though the band’s singles like “Cailin” and “Save Me” only charted in the lower reaches of the Billboard Top 100, the tunes have been radio staples since day one, ensuring huge album sales and die hard fans locally and across the country. The band is rumored to be working on a new album, but rest assured; this special beachside band will showcase its best known material for what will likely be a giant sing-a-long. Equal parts rock, blues and soul, it’s the latter that impresses the most. When the band hits its stride, it provides groove-filled music, as heard on the band’s new album “Good For You.” Whether you plan on shaking your bootie on the dance floor or merely tapping your foot along with the rhythms, The Pheromones provides the perfect soundtrack to any weekend.
