The La Jolla Symphony & Chorus recently announced the appointment of Stephanie Weaver, D.M.A., as its next executive director. Weaver currently serves as executive director of the Cape Conservatory in Cape Cod, MA, a position she has held since 2011. She will begin her tenure at LJS&C in late September 2019, following the retirement of LJS&C Executive Director Diane Salisbury.
“The Board of Directors is very pleased to have nationally respected arts administrator Stephanie Weaver join our organization,” said Brian Schottlaender, LJS&C Board President. “For the last 20 years, Dr. Weaver has provided leadership to several distinguished institutions committed to the education of young and old in the musical arts. We are delighted to welcome her to La Jolla, and look forward to working with her to advance the La Jolla Symphony & Chorus to even greater heights.”
In addition to being an experienced arts administrator and educator, Weaver is an accomplished pianist. She received her D.M.A. degree in piano performance from Michigan State University and her B.A. and M.A. degrees in piano performance from the University of Western Ontario. Prior to her position with the Cape Conservatory, she served a dozen years at the Ann Arbor School for the Performing Arts, first as the School’s Dean of Music and next as its president and executive director.

La Jolla Historical Society to host Not-So-Silent Short Film Festival
Vanguard Culture and the La Jolla Historical Society will present The Not-So-Silent Short Film Festival from 7-9 p.m., Aug. 3 at IDEA1, 899 Park Blvd. The festival will feature a selection of short silent films curated by award-winning soundscape artist Scott Paulson. Paulson and his band, the Teeny-Tiny Pit Orchestra, will invite guests to help bring short silent films to life using a range of eclectic noisemakers.
The theme for this event is Steampunk Celluloid Soirée. Costumes are encouraged. This is a family-friendly event. Gorsich joined the Century Club in April 2012 and has served as its chief operating officer since 2016. He has a long and distinguished career in the sports industry, including 13 years with the San Diego Padres and positions with the San Diego Sports Commission and the NBA’s Portland Trail Blazers.
Gorsich replaces Peter Ripa, who will leave Century Club at the end of July after eight years as the organization’s CEO to take on the same role with a new LPGA tournament in his hometown of Tampa, Florida.
“We couldn’t be happier to promote Marty to the role of CEO,” said Tim Young, the Tournament Chairman for the Century Club of San Diego. “Throughout his seven years with the organization, he has served as a leader behind our impressive growth and many of the fresh and innovative ideas that have made the Farmers Insurance Open one of the best events on the PGA TOUR and a staple of the San Diego sports and social calendar every January.
Gorsich is a San Diego native and a graduate of University High School and U.C. Santa Barbara. He lives in Clairemont. He is intimately familiar with the San Diego market, having served in various business and sales capacities with the Padres from 1997-2010 – a period that saw the team successfully transition from Qualcomm Stadium to PETCO Park.
“I am extremely honored to have been selected to serve as CEO of the Century Club of San Diego,” Gorsich said. “I’ve known ever since I started here more than seven years ago that we had something unique with the Farmers Insurance Open – it’s an event that occupies a special place in the hearts of San Diegans, shines a spotlight on our fantastic city and has a significant charitable impact for those in need in our local communities.”
