CRAFT BEER, GIRL SCOUT COOKIES ON MENU FOR COOKIES ON TAP
For the fifth consecutive year, adult fans of Girl Scout Cookies will pair them with local craft beers during National Girl Scout Cookie Weekend (Feb. 22-24). AleSmith Brewing Co., Mike Hess Brewing and Stone Brewing return as Girl Scouts San Diego’s official partners for Cookies on Tap.
“Backed by research, Girl Scout programs are designed specifically for girls and delivered within an all-girl, girl-led environment,” said Girl Scouts San Diego CEO Carol M. Dedrich. “Cookies on Tap proceeds will help underwrite innovative programs in the outdoors, life skills, entrepreneurship, and STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math).”
Cookies on Tap participants will have an opportunity to write notes of support to accompany cookies donated for Operation Thin Mints, a Girl Scout service project that sends “a taste of home and a note to show we care” to military troops deployed around the world. Since the program was founded here in2002, San Diegans have donated more than three million boxes of Operation Thin Mint cookies to troops and local veterans organizations.
Mike Hess Brewing, which returns to Cookies on Tap for a fifth year, will participate at 3812 Grim Ave. in North Park, 7955 Silverton Ave. in Miramar and 4893 Voltaire St. in Ocean Beach, and its newest location at 805 Ocean Lane in Imperial Beach. 
All Mike Hess locations will pair Hop Cloud Hazy IPA with Savannah Smiles, Habitus Double Rye IPA with Samoas, Grazias Vienna Cream Ale with Do-si-dos, and Umbrix Imperial Stout with Girl Scout S’mores. These exclusive pairings will be featured at select locations: Steel Beach Lager with Trefoils (North Park and Imperial Beach), Into the Sunset Blood Orange IPA with Tagalongs (Ocean Beach), and White Peach My Other Vice with Trefoils (Miramar).
AleSmith Brewing Co.’s  tasting room is at 9990 AleSmith Court (formerly Empire Street) in Miramar. AleSmith will pair its Spezial Pils (German-style pilsner) with Trefoils Girl Scout Cookies, Nut Brown Ale (English style) with Girl Scout S’mores, AleSmith IPA (India pale ale) with Savannah Smiles, and Speedway Stout with Coffee (imperial stout) with Tagalongs.
Stone Brewing locations participating in Cookies on Tap are 795 J Street and 1202 Kettner Blvd. in downtown San Diego, 310 N. Tremont St. in Oceanside, 1999 Citracado Pkwy. In Escondido, and 2816 Historic Decatur Road, at Liberty Station. Stone’s pairings are Stone White Geist Berliner Weisse with Savannah Smiles, Stone Tropic of Thunder Lager with Samoas, Mikhail (Stone Totalitarian Imperial Russian Stout aged in bourbon barrels) with Girl Scout S’mores, and Enter Night Pilsner with Thin Mints.
During the six weeks of the Girl Scout Cookie Program (Jan. 27 to March 10), San Diegans are expected to purchase more than 2.5 million boxes of cookies. When it comes to romance, new data shows that some cities seriously take things to the next level, including San Diego who’s raking in at the No. 3 most romantic city in North America. Instacart, a leader in online groceries, recently released its third annual Instacart Romance Index, highlighting the country’s most romantic cities – and those lacking in the love department – based on the company’s trove of grocery data.
Baltimore took the tile for the most romantic city, while Detroit came in first place for the least more romantic city.  GOFUNDME STARTED TO FLY VAL HOME A GoFundMe campaign was started on Jan. 26 to help raise funds for an OB woman to fly home to Brazil for her mother’s funeral. The fundraiser named “Fly Val Home!” was created by Andrea Macouzet and has raised more than $1,000 of its $4,000 goal for Val Fiorini as of press time. “I have a very dear friend that is grieving the loss of her mother this week,” the description reads. “I’m reaching out to the OB community, friends and family for help. All donations will help with travel expenses to Brazil so Val can be with her family. Val is a huge part of our community. I stop by her coffee shop every morning and everyone there has made me feel like family.” “Val has been a great friend over the years. She is kind, loving, compassionate, and is always thinking of others. A true gem! Losing a mother has got to be one of the most painful experiences in life. I’m heart broken for my dear friend.”

MARCH FOR MEALS 5K CHARITY WALK March for Meals 5K Charity Walk, presented by Barona Band of Mission Indians, will be held on Saturday, March 23 at 8:30 a.m. to support San Diego’s homebound and isolated senior population. Proceeds from the event will help provide nutritious meals and a daily wellness check for this most vulnerable and fragile population.
The walk will be held at at Liberty Station NTC Park, 2455 Cushing Road. Prizes will be awarded to the team and individual with the most funds raised, best costume, and most spirited team. The Black was named as one of the “10 Legendary Headshops” in the magazine’s December 2018 issue. OB SURF CLASSIC Fourth annual OB Surf Classic, presented by the Hodad’s Foundation and AWOL Productions, will take place 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb 23. This surf contest is for all the local rippers and families in the Ocean Beach community. There will be a variety of divisions for men, women, juniors, groms and a fun family division for longboards and shortboards. A portion of the proceeds will go towards the Hodad’s Foundation to encourage more youth sports, summer surf and skate camps. CRAZYTOWN X TO PERFORM AT SAN DIEGO STRIKE FORCE OPENER 
CrazyTown X, the band best known for the 2000 hit single, “Butterfly,” will perform at the San Diego Strike Force’s March 3, home opener at Pechanga Arena San Diego. The Strike Force will host the Tucson Sugar Skulls in their home opener on Sunday, March 3. Kickoff is 5:05 p.m. It also marks the first game in franchise history.

AIR & SPACE MUSEUM OFFERS FREE ADMISSION The San Diego Air & Space Museum announced that it will continue offering free admission to federal employees through Feb. 21. Federal employees can simply show their federal employee identification and they are allowed to bring as many as three immediate family members with them to the museum.
The museum is located at 2001 Pan American Plaza, Balboa Park and is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with admissions until 4:30 p.m. HEMLOCK SOCIETY OF SAN DIEGO ANNOUNCES NEW PRESIDENT
Former La Jollan Faye Girsh, founder and current president of the Hemlock Society of San Diego, passed the reins to Barry Price of Allied Gardens. Girsh was president of the Hemlock Society USA following its founder, Derek Humphry. In 1987, she began the Hemlock Society of San Diego and was president from 1987 to 1996 and again from 2006 to 2019. She is also past-president of the World Federation of Right-to-Die Societies.
Girsh initiated the Caring Friends program at Hemlock, which has become the Final Exit Network, where she serves on the advisory board. She is also on the board of Euthanasia Research and Guidance Organization. For many years she was a board member and newsletter editor for the World Federation of Right-to-Die Societies and is past president.
Price assumed the role of president of the Hemlock Society of San Diego in January. Price’s teaching career includes 35 years teaching at three Texas universities. He earned two Fulbright Fellowships to teach and consult on public administration in Argentina and Uruguay and to teach and research in Nicaragua.
