Shelter Island Boat Launch to remain closed for July 4

Construction of the new Shelter Island Boat Launch Facility continues to make progress but, unfortunately, the launch ramp will remain closed to the public during the July 4 holiday. The Port of San Diego recognizes that this extended closure impacts boaters during the summer season, but due to longer than expected delays, the ramp cannot be opened at this time. The contractor is working on opening a lane as soon as construction allows.
Currently the contractor is building the east half of the breakwater wall system. Pile driving activities are anticipated throughout the early part of July, but could be extended if additional unforeseen underground obstructions are discovered.
The contractor had previously encountered an extensive amount of large buried concrete debris, and the removal of this debris required a change to the project schedule. To make up for lost time, the contractor has been working 10-hour days and most Saturdays.
The new concrete breakwater wall system is more than 75 percent complete, with the remaining portion anticipated to be in place by early July. Additionally, the western portion of the new concrete walkway is underway, as well as construction of the new concrete boat ramp.  It is anticipated that concrete pouring for the new ramp will begin in early July.  The entire project is anticipated to be completed and all lanes open by late 2018.
Once completed, the improvements will make the boat launch safer and more navigable. Upgrades include enlarging the maneuvering area in the basin by 80 percent, replacing the worn-out launch ramp, increasing the lengths of the boarding floats, installing public walking platforms with viewing areas, installing signage and lighting and updating the docks, public walkways, adjacent parking and restroom to current Americans with Disabilities Act Standards.
The Port of San Diego appreciates the public’s patience as we continue with this important public improvement project. Please visit portofsandiego.org/sibl for a list of alternate boat launches.
