Swell Coffee Co. expands roasting operation in Point Loma

Swell Coffee Co., a locally-owned and sustainable coffee roaster, recently expanded its roasting facility in Point Loma at 3515 Hancock St. With this larger space, the budding coffee company can grow its production to meet the needs of San Diego businesses seeking wholesale and delivery options that supply relationship coffee flavored with responsibility, local passion and high customer service.
Swell Coffee says its relationship coffee distinguishes its ethical sourcing practices from the far-too-common coffee-purchasing system that doesn’t profit the families farming coffee beans around the world. According to Swell, the coffee industry has a responsibility to build direct relationships with farmers who harvest the beans, which allows roasters to work with pride and customers to sip locally and do good globally.
“This space gives Swell Coffee the opportunity to meet the high demand for our wholesale coffee and reach businesses that want more goodness in their mug,” says CEO and founder of Swell Coffee Co. John Vallas. “Being a small business doesn’t mean you can’t have a large impact. We want coffee drinkers to feel proud to start the day with Swell coffee and know that what they sip has a do-good ripple effect beyond San Diego.”
The expanded 2,287-square-foot roasting facility houses a top-of-the-line coffee roaster and soon-to-be cold-brew bottling line. The local company is best known for its signature Beach Goth blend, described as “dark, sinful and complex.” Swell crafts its coffee in San Diego, but sources beans from the passionate and talented people farming coffee in Peru, Ethiopia, Burundi, Colombia, El Salvador, Guatemala and Mexico.
Vallas began Swell Coffee in November of 2011 after 10 years serving in the Navy. Vallas merged his passion for surfing with his appreciation for small businesses to create the ocean-oriented Swell Coffee Co. His small operation quickly grew into one of San Diego’s up-and-coming coffee roasters with two cafes in coastal San Diego neighborhoods. Today, the companyvprovides its relationship coffee to local markets, restaurants and breweries and operates cafes in Mission Beach and Del Mar.
