Summer concerts in Standley Park
The 2019 Summer Concert Series continues through August, featuring a variety of musical styles. All concerts are at Standley Park, 3585 Governor Drive, and are scheduled for Sunday evenings, from 5-7 p.m. Bring a lawn chair or blanket, snacks and drinks, and enjoy a lovely evening with friends, family and neighbors in University City. Arrive early to pick out a favorite spot in the shade. Don’t forget your dancing shoes! The remaining schedule is: • July 28 – Los Tecolotes – ’60s through ’90s rock • Aug. 4 – Electric Waste Band – Grateful Dead jam band • Aug. 11 – Full Strength Funk Band – funk, R&B, soul • Aug. 18 – Y3K – modern variety rock band • Aug. 25 – Forecast – a wide variety of jazz styles from funk to swing to bossa nova Banana Split Day
The 38th annual Banana Split will be held on Saturday, Aug. 3, at Standley Park, 3585 Governor Drive. Get there early to enjoy the park. Ice cream and toppings are served promptly at 2 p.m. All are welcome at this Standley Park free tradition. Don’t forget, bring your own banana and join in the fun! Backpacks for Kids Please join Coldwell Banker on Sunday, Aug. 4, from 3-6 p.m. at Standley Park as they load up their truck with school supplies for the Children and Youth in Transition, a department in the San Diego School District. Serving more than 1,100 children, they welcome backpacks (full or empty), paper supplies, pens, pencils, drawing materials, appropriate electronics and even new socks and other clothing to start the new school year. Come by and add your contribution to the truck and then stay for the Summer Concert. Thank you in advance for working with your local Coldwell Banker team of agents to help San Diego children. Kids Summer Camp
Chabad of University City will be offering a Kids Summer Camp from Aug. 5-16, for ages 3 to 11 years old. The camp will include art, sports, swimming, and field trips. To register, go to chabaduc.org/camp, and for more information, email [email protected] or call 858-455-1670, ext. 3. The Chabad Center is located at 3813 Governor Drive. Median cleanups make a difference
Driving on Regents Road or Genesee Avenue in University City, you’ll notice that the medians are free of weeds, unlike many other areas of the city. The recent median cleanups on Regents and Genesee are examples of the use of membership dollars paid to the University City Community Association (UCCA). Because of this year’s heavy rains, weeds are now growing overhead in many of our city roadways. UCCA took the initiative to contract a cleanup crew to eliminate the unsightly weed growth in the community’s entry and exit roads. UCCA funds made this project possible, as well as supporting UC Celebration, EdUCate!, local school events, Standley Park Holiday Party, median maintenance, Friends of the Library and much more. To learn about, or make a donation to UCCA, go to universitycitynews.org.
