It is not always easy for a freshman to not only crack a high school team’s lineup but also have an impact in the process. When it comes to the Mission Bay girls soccer program, freshman Camrin Peaslee is doing just that. A starting forward on the varsity team, Peaslee had tallied 12 goals through the first eight games. Off the field, Peaslee carries an impressive 3.8 GPA.
“Camrin’s ability is matched by her work ethic,” head coach Jorge Palacios commented. “She is super-talented and tireless on the field. Camrin has not only scored goals, but the majority of her goals have been game-winners.”
According to Palacios, he thinks Camrin’s success on the field has shown how talent, work ethic, and determination pay off. “The great thing about sports is it is merit-based. Camrin’s success on and off the field is proof of that,” Palacios added.
Beach & Bay Press recently caught up with Peaslee for an email Q&A about her first year on the varsity team and more. B&BP: What got you interested in soccer and coming out for the team and what do you enjoy most about the sport?
Peaslee: When I was 6 years old I had friends playing soccer and wanted to try it out. I loved it so much that I kept playing and continued to grow with the sport. I enjoy being a part of a team that supports me through wins and losses. B&BP: As only a freshman, are you surprised at how quickly the game has come to you and how you’ve contributed to the team?
Peaslee: With all of the hard work and dedication that I have put in to playing soccer, it has now proved to me that I can compete with older players and teams that may be a harder task to conquer. So no, I am not completely surprised but maybe just a little. B&BP: As a freshman, what have you learned from the older kids on the team?
Peaslee: I’ve learned many things from my older teammates. I mean they are older than me, so they do know more. They guide me on and off the field and point me in the right direction. B&BP: Given playing sports takes up a fair amount of time, how do you make sure your studies do not fall behind? What are the classes you enjoy the most?
Peaslee: I make sure I don’t fall behind in my studies by using my time wisely. School is my top priority. I do all of my homework and class projects first, then if there is spare time I would like to watch a movie on Netflix. I like English the most out of all my classes. B&BP: Once you are done playing high school soccer in several years, could you see yourself playing it in college?
