Scripps on Prospect: Evolution of Villa and Cottage — The La Jolla Historical Society and the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego are presenting “Scripps on Prospect: Evolution of Villa and Cottage,” a collaborative exhibition that examines the historical evolution of their respective buildings — MCASD at 700 Prospect and the Historical Society’s Wisteria Cottage at 780 Prospect. The exhibition opens Sept. 21 in the MCASD’s Axline Court.
The original buildings were constructed within less than a decade of each other, and both as private residences. MCASD, formerly known as South Moulton Villa, was built in 1896 and was the residence of Ellen Browning Scripps until her death in 1932. Her half-sister, Eliza Virginia, purchased Wisteria Cottage shortly after it was built in 1904 and it remained in her name until her death in 1921. Private walkways linked both buildings together, remnants of which remain today.
The exhibition runs through Jan. 5.  A slightly revised version of the exhibition will be open from Feb. 8 through May 10 in the MCASD Jacobs Gallery.  MCASD is located at 700 Propsect St. and is open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily; closed Wednesday. The museum is free on the third Thursday of every month from 5 to 7 p.m.  Upcoming exhibits:
Quint Contemporary Art, 7547 Girard Ave., presents Adam Belt:?Longview, a solo exhibition of sculptural and installation work by Adam Belt. The exhibition opens on Saturday, Sept. 14 with a public reception from 6 to 8 p.m., and the artist will be in attendance.

The La Jolla Art Association Gallery, 8100 Paseo del Ocaso, opens its new exhibit, “It’s a Mod, Mod World” with a reception on Sunday, Sept. 15 from 5 to 7 p.m. The exhibit, which features modern art, runs through Sept. 20. The reception will feature art, plus poetry by self-described beat poet Chris Vannoy.
lajollaart.org R.B. Stevenson Gallery, 7661 Girard Ave., Suite 201, presents San Diego artist Richard Allen Morris’ exhibit, “Quick Draw,” a collection of drawings, from Sept. 14 through Oct. 19. An opening reception for the artist will take place Saturday, Sept. 14 from 5 to 8 p.m. Renowned artist John August Swanson will have a rare exhibit and sale of his artwork at St. James by-the-Sea Episcopal Church, 743 Prospect St. from Sept. 13-15. The artist is known for his biblical imagery and his works are in permanent collections at the Vatican, the Smithsonian Institution and more. A reception will be held Sept. 13 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tickets, which are $20, $25 at the door, include wine and hors d’oeuvres, and can be purchased at www.sjbts.org.
