Mission Bay cross country, girls tennis ready for fall seasons

Cross country
The boys and girls cross country teams, under head coach Barry Dancher, are hoping to do even better in league action from a season ago. The boys and girls went 6-2 and 5-3, respectively last season.
On the girls’ side, Gina Queck went to the CIF finals as a freshman last year. She will return this season and be running with fellow varsity returnees Linda Giffing, Maria Hernandez, Marisol Ugarte, and Leilani Ferguson.
On the boys’ side, the Bucs are led by returnees Nick Archer, TK Berne, Sean Pavone, Trevor Reichenberg, Carter Taffe, and Fernando Ugarte.
“We hope to have another successful year, with each of our athletes fulfilling their own unique potential,” Dancher commented. Girls tennis
Head coach Trong Tong’s squad finished at 9-5 overall, 9-3 in league play last fall.
The Bucs made Team CIF’s as the No. 16 seed, losing to top-seeded Vincent Memorial in the opening round.
This year’s squad will turn to Ariana Giauque, Ryan Stone and Juliette Tran as singles players, with Amanda Edumunds, Rosina Valia and Sophia Gillenberg leading the doubles action, according to Tong.
“This season, we’ve been reassigned from City League, consisting of all Division III schools, to Eastern League, which predominately consists of Division II schools,” Tong commented. “Additionally, our star player McKenna Mountain decided to focus more on tournaments and won’t be returning with the team. This is a huge loss for us as McKenna won three rounds in Individual CIF last year and took out a seed in the process. Although this season will be an uphill climb, we’re certainly not shying away from the challenge. “On the upside, our team has gained a little more depth this season with the addition of a couple of freshmen and a junior, who are fairly experienced. Our main goals for the season are to be at least in contention for a Division III Team CIF spot and also send at least one singles and our top doubles team to Individual CIF,” Tong said.
