Among the newest business additions to the Pacific Beach community is a tavern called The Bar Key, which formally opened its doors on March 30. The establishment, located at 954 Turquoise St. between Bayard and Cass streets, is owned by David Robins, Grace Keihoe-Graves and David Shaw. “We’re a quieter place away from the main drag on Garnet Avenue where you can come to watch sports,” said Robins. “But we are not a sports bar.” There is a selection of 10 beers on tap and the price range for the appetizer menu varies between $5 and $12 with offerings like “frickles” (fried pickles), calamari, shoestring fries, sweet-potato fries, tenderloin bits and Bobby “Orr” rings, named after the hockey Hall of Fame Boston Bruins defenseman. The Bar Key offer 15 types of chicken wings for $11: plain, Cajun, teriyaki, BBQ, buffalo, garlic butter, lemon butter, mango fire, gorgonzola, bacon, sesame wasabi, bacon cheddar, BBQ mint, parmesan and pesto. In addition to the appetizers and chicken wings, The Bar Key has a garden salad for $5, a chicken sandwich with fries for $6 and a Zetterburger for $8. The Bar Key is a hockey-friendly establishment, which is a bit unusual for a West Coast city where hockey is hardly as popular as other sports like football, baseball or basketball. “I’m originally from the East Coast and a Detroit Red Wings fan,” said Robins. “One of my partners is a Boston Bruins fan.” Inside The Bar Key, there are seven television screens with two at the bar, three in the dining area, one in the lounge and another in the men’s restroom so the patrons will not miss any action. Prior to The Bar Key, Robins spent 12 years as co-owner and manager of Froggy’s which was once located at the same site. But Robins stressed that The Bar Key is completely different from Froggy’s in terms of both the consistency and quality of the food. For more information, call (858) 488-8200.
