Wind ‘N Sea swimmers make big splash at meet

The Wind ’N Sea Swim Team (WSST) recently hosted a “C” all-ages swim meet at the Coggan Family Aquatic Complex (CFAC). More than 400 swimmers from around the county participated in the meet. WSST, which is based at the CFAC, had 35 swimmers competing, ranging in ages from 6 to 17 years old. “Our meet was a ‘C’ level meet, which means it was geared more toward the beginning-level competitive swimmer,” WSST head coach Paton McClung remarked. “I thought it was an excellent opportunity for our newer swimmers to compete, and for many of them it was their first taste of real competition. We also had some of our veterans swimming, too, some who had just aged-up and some who just wanted to get in some races in events that are not their favorites.”   WSST veteran Danielle Collins, who attends Muirlands Middle School and just turned 13, swam the 400 yard IM for the first time, while her younger sister Nikki, who is 9 years old and a student at Bird Rock Elementary, took her first stab at the 500 yard freestyle. “I thought the team performed very well,” McClung continued. “The meet also provided us with an opportunity to showcase our wonderful La Jolla pool. “Many people still don’t realize the CFAC, although located at La Jolla High School, is a community pool that is open to the public almost every day. It’s a great facility and it’s great for the community to see it in action.” WSST is a USA Swimming team that practices year-round at the CFAC located at La Jolla High School. Designed to accommodate all different levels of swimming from ages 6 to 18, WSST’s goal is to provide a fun and exciting environment to improve stroke technique, conditioning and competitive spirit. For more information, see the team’s Web site, www.windnseaswimteam.com, or come to the CFAC any weekday from 4 to 6 p.m. to check out the action and talk to the coaches.
