BEACH ADVISORIES ISSUED FOR MISSION BAY
San Diego County officials recently announced beach advisories. Unhealthy bacteria levels in the water triggered advisories issued along Mission Bay’s Leisure Lagoon (Comfort Station swim area), North Cove (Vacation Isle), and La Jolla’s Children’s Pool, A beach closure was issued for the shoreline between the U.S.-Mexico border and the north end of the Tijuana Slough National Wildlife Refuge due to sewage-contaminated water.

The last volunteer clean-up at the Fiesta Island dog park this year will take place 9:30-11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 5. FIDO will provide the waste bags and single-use latex gloves. Bring your picker-uppers and durable gloves if you like. FUTURE BUC CHEER CAMP Future Buc cheer camp will take place from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 12 in the dance room at Mission Bay High. Support the cheerleaders of MBHS and learn some cheers for Future Buc Night on Oct. 18 and cheer on the field with the girls for the first half of the game. They will also be making a bow for you to wear at the game. The cheerleaders will be providing a coloring sheet, water, and a small snack to share. Lyft has launched its first scooter model built from the ground up specifically for scooter-share in the San Diego area distinguished by their iconic pink wheels. Lyft designed this model with a wider base, thicker, air-filled wheels for a smoother trip, a more durable build, a more powerful battery that can charge faster and last significantly longer, and a hand brake, similar to a bike brake.
“The new Lyft scooters take the rider experience to the next level,” said Kyle Zuvella, market manager for Lyft Bikes and Scooters in San Diego. “For the first time, Lyft scooters will also feature our iconic pink wheels, making it undeniably clear that scooters are central to Lyft’s vision for a future where cities are built around people, not private cars.”  BLOODY AT THE BEACH CONTEST Mission Beach Realty’s third annual Best Bloody at the Beach Contest will take place noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct 26. This event is held in conjunction with Guava Beach Bar & Grill, which has hosted the fundraiser all three years. All monies raised at the event go to support research conducted by the National MS Society. World Wildlife Fund’s Panda Paddle is a new way to stand up for the world’s waters, wildlife, and wild places. Join together with other nature lovers starting a 9:30 a.m. on Oct. 26 in Mission Bay’s Bonita Cove. Get on board and register at worldwildlife.org. There will be courses for paddlers at every experience level and a bayside festival filled with music, food, face painting, and other family-friendly options. Paddleboards will be available to rent on site. HOPE WALK AT CROWN POINT PARK
The San Diego Chapter of the Huntington’s Disease Society of America (HDSA) will host a San Diego Team Hope Walk from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 6 at Crown Point Park on Crown Point Drive. This walk is a fundraising event that brings the community together over the collective goal of improving the lives of people with Huntington’s disease. Costumes are encouraged and bartenders will be pouring vodka drink specials all night long. Complimentary parking will be available at Ventura Cove. SD HUMANE SOCIETY OPENS BEHAVIOR CENTER
San Diego Humane Society recently opened a new, state-of-the-art Behavior Center at its San Diego Campus at 5465 Gaines St. Animals in the Behavior Center face challenges such as anxiety, fear, resource guarding and overstimulation. The Behavior Center is one of only a handful throughout the country to provide a uniquely-designed space that removes the noise, unpredictability and other barriers to rehabilitation found in a traditional shelter, and replaces them with an environment that supports the intensive work these animals require to become adoptable and ready to share their lives with new families.
This center, and SDHS’s larger behavior program across all three campuses, plays a vital role in ensuring zero euthanasia of healthy and treatable animals in San Diego County. As the only comprehensive animal behavioral rehabilitation program in San Diego, the Behavior Center is the only hope for hundreds of the community’s most at-risk animals each year. 2018 TOP BABY NAMES According to County Health and Human Services Agency, a total of 41,555 babies were born in San Diego County in 2018.
