North PB ready for tasting

Nibble your way from restaurant to restaurant in northern Pacific Beach and earn money for local schools? It’s the fifth annual restaurant walk! On Wednesday, Feb. 18, restaurants in northern Pacific Beach will open their doors for the restaurant walk from 5 to 8 p.m. The one-mile eating walk stretches from La Jolla Boulevard to Cass Street. New restaurants have opened in the area since last year’s walk, including The Fig Tree Café on Cass Street that replaced the popular Italian eatery where locals brought their own wine to the table. Still featuring a large outdoor patio, The Fig Tree Café serves largely organic, California/Mediterranean food like smoked salmon omelets or, on the hippy side, blue corn pancakes and whole grain granola. Blazin’ Grill is the new burger and pizza joint on the Turquoise block. The Blazin’ Burger will surely live up to its name: topped with spicy sriracha ketchup and sriracha aioli (a spicy take on a traditional French mayonnaise), with sweet potato fries or coleslaw on the side. Coffee shops and sweet spots will also remain open like Java Jones Coffeehouse on Cass Street, the Chocolate Haus and Chronic Smoothies on Turquoise Street. The Mission Bay High Dixieland Jazz Band will play. But the event isn’t all fun and food. Two active mothers with children in the Pacific Beach schools launched the restaurant walk five years ago to rally the community behind the area schools and to raise money for extracurricular activities like music club and a marine science field trip. Kathy Upp and Laura Daly wanted to rally the community behind the Pacific Beach schools at a time when some residents were sending their children elsewhere for school. “We put it together one year to help the schools and it has sort of taken on a life of its own,” Upp said. The restaurant walk generates about $7,500 for the elementary, middle and high school. Eventually, Upp would like to see other businesses participate in the event as well. “I want it to be a business thing as well as a restaurant walk,” Upp said. “There are so many people walking by.” Other restaurants that will participate include Pernicano’s Pizza House, Turquoise Coffee, The French Gourmet, Froggy’s Bar and Grill and Café Bar Europa. Tickets cost $15 for adults and $7 for children. Tickets are available at: Mission Bay High School, Pacific Beach Middle, Pacific Beach Elementary, Java Jones Coffeehouse, Turquoise Coffee, Leilani’s Café, Pernicano’s Pizza House and San Diego National Bank.
