Eagles never take off against Knights

The Bishop’s School football team will hit the road to take on the Horizon Panthers in the second round of the CIF playoffs after shutting out the Julian Eagles, 49-0, in first round action at La Jolla’s Gene Edwards Stadium last Friday, Nov. 21. “We’re going to practice hard this week, that’s for sure,” Knight freshman quarterback Joey Moreno (2-of-4, 60 yards, 2 TDs) said. “We’ll get in our conditioning and go full speed the whole time.” Against Julian, Bishop’s already appeared to be at top speed, while the Eagles seemed to be stuck in quicksand as senior running back Mike Jensen (4 carries, 58 yards, 1 TD) opened the scoring on a 6-yard touchdown run to give the Knights an early 7-0 lead with 0:51 left in the first period. Bishop’s came right back and got on the scoreboard once again as Moreno hooked up with junior running back Hector Eribez (1 catch, 40 yards, 1 TD) on a touchdown pass from 40 yards out to pad the Knight cushion at 14-0. “We played good defense and controlled the ball,” Bishop’s coach Mike David said. Later in the first quarter, senior running back Jacob Kelly (5 carries, 59 yards, 1 TD) showed that the Knights were in complete control of the game when he knifed into the end zone on a 6-yard touchdown run to build the Bishop’s bulge to 21-0. “I’m proud of the way we performed,” David said. Moreno was one Knight who continued to perform well in the second quarter, as he threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to junior tight end-kicker Justin Peabody (1 catch, 20 yards, 1 TD, 7 PATs) to make the score 28-0 in favor of Bishop’s. “We just tried to play our game,” David said. Just like when sophomore running back Kyle Jester (2 carries, 68 yards, 1 TD) made a joke of the Julian defense by juking Eagle defenders on his way to a 53-yard touchdown jaunt to jack up the Knight edge to 35-0. “We played hard,” David said.  “Our (Coastal) league opponents toughened us up.” Later in the second quarter, junior running back A.J. Chederick (4 carries, 55 yards, 1 TD) was in a league of his own on a 46-yard touchdown run to extend the Bishop’s advantage to 42-0 heading into the locker room at halftime. After the intermission, it was more of the same as junior running back Christian Theuer (4 carries, 37 yards, 1 TD) scored on a 7-yard touchdown run with a running clock in the third quarter to seal the victory for the Knights. With the win, Bishop’s improves to 5-6 and faces Horizon (5-4-1), a fellow Coastal League member that won the teams’ previous meeting on Halloween, 42-18.  With the loss, Julian falls to 7-4.
