EDUCATION NOTEBOOK

On Saturday, April 30 from 8 a.m. to noon, 250 volunteers will clean and paint at Mission Bay High School as a part of a national service day for the local Mormon Church. Scott Chipman, a resident of Pacific Beach who had two children graduate from MBHS, proposed MBHS for this service project and will be coordinating with Mission Bay High School and the volunteer force. Volunteers from both the church and MBHS will be washing, painting, fixing, trimming and scrubbing the halls and grounds of the high school. This day of service by the Mormon Church is an opportunity for Mission Bay High School to get a fresh, new makeover. Teacher Appreciation Week is May 2 through May 6. Students and parents from the Pacific Beach-area schools will host breakfasts, make lunches, drop off treats, send “thank you” notes and show teachers how much they are appreciated. The Pacific Beach Middle School and MBHS Parent/Teacher Organization (FOPBSS) will provide breakfast and lunch to teachers on Tuesday and Wednesday. Chipotle restaurant on Garnet Avenue will donate half-price burritos. It is especially important this year to show our teachers how much we value their talent, patience and hard work in the face of looming budget cuts. These educators have an enormous impact on the lives of students and the community honors them this week. On Monday, May 2 from 8 to 10:30 a.m, Pacific Beach Middle School will host this year’s final school tour beginning in the media center/library. For those who want to learn more about the International Baccalaureate Program at PBMS and all the exciting opportunities for incoming middle-schoolers, join the school tour called “a day in the life” of a PBMS student. Participants will meet administrators, learn about IB, meet teachers and see students in action in class. Students are welcome. Saturday, May 21 from 2 to 5 p.m., the Mission Bay High School Music Department holds its inaugural” Jazz on the Green” at Mission Bay High School.  This event will feature the school’s jazz ensembles, including the Concert Jazz Band, the Jazz Ensemble and the award-winning Dixie Jazz Band. It will conclude in a special appearance by the Rey Vinole Swing Band from San Diego City College, featuring Mission Bay alumni Brad Steinwehe (trumpet) and Joey Carano (guitar).  This outdoor event is open to the public and will offer food from Leilani’s Cafe, swing dancing and lessons, activities for children and music for all ages. Families are encouraged to bring their own seating or blankets. All proceeds go to support the music program at Mission Bay High School. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children/students.
