Woman robs shop, escapes on bike A woman robbed the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory at 1139 Prospect St. on Monday, Sept. 28, at approximately 6 p.m., according to police reports. Armed with a handgun, a white female in her early fifties robbed the store and was last seen riding a bicycle southbound on Prospect Street with an undisclosed amount of money. The suspect is described as blond, approximately 5 foot 4 inches tall with a heavy build, and was wearing a dark blue jacket with sunglasses, according to San Diego Police Department spokeswoman Monica Munoz. Military to offer free H1N1 flu shots Defense Department officials are preparing to launch a vaccination program against the H1N1 flu virus and the traditional flu and will be making the shots available to all military members this month.  The vaccination program will allow military personnel to avoid having to pay for H1N1 flu vaccinations from civilian doctors and at the same time preserve available vaccine supplies in the public stock, according to Army Lt. Col. Wayne Hachley, director of preventative medicine for the Defense Department’s health affairs. Military officials said vaccinations against the traditional flu are already being made available to service members at no cost. For more information, www.defenselink.mil/home/features/2009/0509_h1n1. ‘ Muirlands MS launches ‘change’ campaign Muirlands Middle School is squeezed between a rock and a hard place like every other school in the district, except that it has a few saving graces — its foundation and generous donors. An anonymous donor recently gave $25,000 to Muirlands’ general fund.   This year, the foundation was able to fork out $30,000 to save one of the school’s two vice-principals that the district had planned to cut. The school nurse will make an additional visit during the week — for a total of three times — on the foundation’s dime. In past years, the foundation has focused its attention on funding technology needs. The Muirlands Foundation has launched a formal campaign this year titled “Peace, Love, Change” with a goal to raise $100,000. Nicole Repp is heading the campaign. Muirlands Principal Chris Hargrave said the word “change” is an operative part of the middle school experience. “When kids come to middle school, they’re young and still children,” Hargrave said. “By the time they leave middle school, they’ve grown emotionally and physically.” The word “change” can also refer to a pocketful of coins donors opt to drop in the bucket — every penny counts. So far this year, the school has raised $12,500 from selling children’s PE clothes and T-shirts to parents. Corners will be cleaned Saturday The La Jolla Nell Carpenter Beautification/Streetscape Committee of La Jolla Town Council will sponor aclean-up this Saturday, Oct. 3. Volunteers will work from 9 a.m. to noon to remove trash and debris from various street corners around La Jolla. Tools will be furnished, alng with gloves and trash bags. Snacks will be served, and food will also be available at the end of the event. Members of sororities and fraternities at the University of San Diego are espcially encouraged to take part to fulfill community service requirements. The necessary forms will be signed.
