EdUCate! receives Community Partner of the Year award
Due to the generous donations made by EdUCate! to the physical education department at University City High School, Ashley Franz nominated the organization for recognition by the San Diego Region of the California Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (CAHPERD). Franz observed the regular support of physical education by EdUCate! The Honor and Awards Committee selected EdUCate! as a “2017 Community Partner of the Year.” The award presentation took place at the San Diego Region CAHPERD end of the year celebration and awards on May 18 at the Barefoot Bar located in the Paradise Point Resort. EdUCate! board member Kat McGhee represented the organization, and accepted the award. For information about EdUCate!’s mission and projects, visit www.uc-educate.org. USS Midway history lesson University City’s Fred Shatsky, docent at the USS Midway Museum, will speak on the USS Midway’s history as a mighty warship and its current success as a museum and major San Diego attraction, on Tuesday, June 13 from 2 to 3 p.m. at the UC Branch Library. The event is presented by the USS Midway Museum Speakers Bureau. Free USS Midway Museum passes will be given away to a select few at the end of the presentation. The library is located at 4155 Governor Drive. For more information, call 858-552-1655. Standley music director Marcus to retire
Come to Standley Park on Friday, June 9 from 4 to 7 p.m. to help him retire on a happy note! Bring a food dish to share or come to wish him well! Present and past students and parents, as well as the UC community, are all welcome to attend. Students and alumni may bring a picture of yourself with Marcus for his scrapbook – and don’t forget to sign the book. For more information, contact Sharon Hom at [email protected].
UCHS boys golf team becomes back-to-back champs
The boys of spring have done it again. The UCHS boys varsity golf team are back-to-back Central League champions for the first time in school history. The team has not lost a league match in two years with a league record of 18-0 the past two seasons. Coach John Lapp, a UC resident, is very proud of the boys and already looks forward to next season. Golf team members include: Ash Clarence, Jacob Tapia, Sean Nguyen, Justin Anderson, Nathan Stepanski, Cole Doolittle, and Dylan Hale. Standley Park gets improvements approval
On May 18, the San Diego Parks and Recreation Board unanimously approved the Standley Middle School and Spreckels Elementary School joint use and aquatic facility general development plan amendment projects. Dr. John Lee Evans, Board of Education member and chair of the Imagine UC 2020 Committee, outlined the issues under consideration, which includes a new initiative put forth by Mayor Faulconer and San Diego Unified School District Superintendent Cindy Marten called the Play All Day Parks program. SDUSD will help fund the capital projects and the city will underwrite the operational costs. Many of the proposals were suggested by community members, including a community stage pavilion, Swanson Pool updates, and park jogging path. Both the schools and community will benefit, as the stage pavilion will be used for student events, summer concerts, UC Celebration, and Oktoberfest. The new pool will be used for UCHS water polo and swim teams, and the jogging path will improve the overall health of UC residents. For more information, visit www.ImproveUC.org.
Good Deeds: Students ‘come together’
Spreckels Elementary students volunteered at I Love A Clean San Diego’s Kids’ Ocean Day on May 18, helping pick up trash on Mission Beach. Afterward, the students created the living art “come together” piece on South Mission Beach. The Kids’ Ocean Day included students from other Title I schools. The students truly did embody the spirit of the message, as they came together to help clean local beaches. Well done to all participants. For more information, visit www.CleanSD.org.
