Annual board elections for the 2018 calendar year will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 8 at 6 p.m. at the University Community Branch Library, located at 4155 Governor Drive. Current nominees are: President – Barry Bernstein, incumbent;
Vice-President – Diane Ahern, incumbent;
Secretary – Deanna Ratnikova;
Treasurer – Don Hotz, incumbent.
Additional nominations will be accepted at the election meeting. In order to run for office, you must be a member in good standing and have attended at least two UCCA meetings during this calendar year. By-laws recommendations were decided at a special sub-committee meeting on Oct. 22. UCCA board members recommended a number of changes in their by-laws. A complete listing of those recommendations can be found at UniversityCityNews.org. Among the recommendations, which will be voted upon at the Nov. 8 Election of Officers meeting, is a recommendation that the four elected officers serve two-year terms, and that the president-elect may only serve for two consecutive terms. The UCHS Hall of Fame Committee is looking for nominations for the 2018 class of inductees. UCHS Hall of Fame candidates should have the following qualities:
1. Graduated from UCHS 10 years ago (or more);
2. Has excelled in her/his field on a national or international level;
3. Is an exceptional role-model for our UCHS students and community;

Baroque music concert On Sunday, Nov. 12, UC United Church will present an ensemble of current and former members of the La Jolla Symphony orchestra who will perform four concertos from the Baroque period. The program begins at 7 p.m., will include a free-will offering benefiting the church and its music program, and will last for about one hour. Concertos are works that contrast a small group of players with a larger group; the form was invented in Italy during the 17th century, and has been popular ever since. Once invented, the form spread across Europe, mainly through the efforts of music publishers. They plan a program that will start with a “Concerto for Trumpet” by Tomaso Albinoni (1712) (to be played on saxophone by Steve Shields), followed by a Concerto for Bassoon by Joseph Bodin de Boismortier (1729). The program will continue with two concertos by J.S. Bach, his “Concerto for two violins and orchestra” and his” Brandenburg Concerto number “2 (both circa 1720). UC sisters honored as Classics 4 Kids’ volunteers of the year
Longtime UC residents and sisters, Caryl Lees Witte and Mimi Lee will be honored at a special luncheon event as volunteers of the year for Classics 4 Kids, a local non-profit San Diego organization that brought music education to almost 30,000 students, parents and teachers last year.
Caryl Lees Witte is a 30-plus year realtor with Century 21 Award in UC and has been a community volunteer and goodwill ambassador for UC. Caryl has been a long-standing major donor to the EdUCate! Foundation for Public Schools in University City, as well as to the Behavioral Health Committee (BHC) of Jewish Family Service, Advocates for Classical Music and Classics 4 Kids.
Mimi spent 22 years at Grossmont College as a Learning Disabilities Specialist and Chair of Disabled Student Services. Since her retirement in 1999, Mimi has been a passionate volunteer for the Behavioral Health Committee, chairing an annual BHC speaker event, Advocates for Classical Music and Classics 4 Kids, as a champion of music education for elementary school students throughout San Diego County.
Classics 4 Kids provides critical music education, through professional orchestra concerts and in-school workshops designed for elementary students throughout San Diego County. The organization conducts interactive programs at local hospitals and community events to further music awareness. Classics 4 Kids has particular outreach to Title 1, low-income schools to further academic advancement, personal growth, and creativity in disadvantaged youth.
