New Soda & Swine debuts in Liberty Station

The new Soda & Swine restaurant recently opened its second location in San Diego at Liberty Station in Point Loma.
Born from the vision of local designer Paul Basile, the 5,000-square-foot building housing the new eatery underwent a complete transformation with every element designed and fabricated by his award-winning design firm BASILE Studio.
Taking inspiration from the original Normal Heights outpost, which won the 2014 San Diego Architectural Foundation Orchid Award for “Interior Design,” the overall concept exudes approachable familiarity with a raw, yet refined aesthetic. Standout features include a 20-foot Foosball table that doubles as cocktail seating, hand welded ‘double-S’ steel barstools, 29-foot brass quilted bar inspired by an airplane wing (a nod to the overhead flight path), a new oversized custom terrace and massive 19 foot by 12 foot glass paned, flip door.
Some of the design details:
– Tucked under the table are 20 custom cast-iron, cherry red stools with leather tops;
– Near the entrance is an in-house pie shop inspired by the quaint mom and pops found on the streets of New York City. Counter-balanced viewing windows flip up so restaurant-goers can watch workers baking fresh-made pies daily in the wood stone oven;
– Basile is also known for their brilliant and functional bar, and restaurant layouts—Soda & Swine seats 75 indoors, and 40 outdoors
– The 29-foot quilted brass cocktail bar with sweeping undercurve was originally inspired by an airplane wing – a unique nod to Liberty Station’s proximity to the overhead airport flight path;
– 19 custom ‘double-S’ steel barstools with etched wood tops were all built at Basile. Brass ‘S’ purse hooks hang off the back of the stools for clever accommodation;
– Navy and white bohemian tiles line the back bar as well as the interior of the pie shop and exterior cocktail bar;
– Vintage wood ship lath reclaimed from the demolition of another project lines the walls of the restaurant with sprawling greenery;
– Custom Basile Built cedar banquettes, cedar tables with brass inlay and cherry red custom cast stools line the dining area;
– Opening up the airy interior to the oversized terrace is a 19 foot by 12 foot steel and glass paneled flip door powered by a remote actuator. A smaller door also allows access – a door within a door;
– The outside terrace features a standalone cocktail bar, custom wood and steel awning, as well as cozy banquettes with brass fire features;
– Another element that translates from the original location is a quilted steel, fireplace facade; and
– A 20-foot foosball table was built entirely by the talented artisans at BASILE Studio. Complete with 40 hand-stitched leather handles, a glass table top allows patrons to set a drink down or grab the foosball in between sets.
