Peanuts' voice star sentenced for Gore threat attempt

A man who stalked a La Jolla plastic surgeon in 2013 was sentenced Dec. 7 to four years and eight months in prison for attempting to threaten Sheriff Bill Gore and making a criminal threat to the manager of a mobile home park. Peter Robbins, 59, was denied probation and fined $2,694 by visiting Superior Court Judge William Chidsey. Robbins received no extra time for breaking probation conditions of his 2013 case in which his ex-girlfriend was also threatened. As a child, Robbins was the voice of cartoon character Charlie Brown in numerous “Peanuts” television specials in the 1960s. Chidsey gave Robbins credit for 298 days in jail and ordered him to pay $424.50 to Patrick Brophy, the manager of an Oceanside mobile home park where Robbins used to live. “You may have some mental issues, but those issues may be addressed with the Department of Corrections,” said Chidsey. Robbins told the judge on Nov. 10 that he was mentally ill. He expressed remorse for writing letters that indicated that Gore should be harmed. All local judges removed themselves from hearing Robbins’ new case after Deputy District Attorney Brenda Daly filed a charge in September that claimed Robbins made a criminal threat to Judge Robert O’Neill. That charge was dropped Dec. 7. Daly said she thought the term “was a just sentence” for the crime of “threats of terror he rained on this community.” She said Robbins made verbal threats to people walking their dogs and elderly people in Oceanside. Brophy’s wife, Renee, spoke at the sentencing, saying Robbins’ threats had scared her and others. Her husband said he was “somewhat satisfied” with the sentence, adding, “I think he should have got more time.” “He won’t be a nuisance in our life anymore,” said Patrick Brophy. “I’m very happy it’s over. We’re going to move on to better things in life.” Robbins was arrested Feb. 25 by the probation department for violating terms of his 2013 probation case. When he appeared before O’Neill earlier, he told him he “should be held in a room and forced to watch Lawrence Welk reruns,” among other comments. Another judge found he was mentally competent to stand trial. The threat to the sheriff was indirect, and there was no evidence he could carry it out, said Daly. He pleaded guilty to attempting to threaten Gore and making a criminal threat to the park manager. In 2013, Robbins demanded money he paid for his girlfriend’s breast enhancement surgery be returned, and he pleaded guilty to stalking the La Jolla plastic surgeon. He is on a 10-year restraining order from contacting her. – Neal Putnam
