Pacifico vintage bus rolls through beach area PACIFIC BEACH — Through the end of the month, local beer enthusiasts can hitch a free weekend ride to and from downtown on a Pacifico vintage bus. The shuttle coincides with the launch of Pacifico on draft in San Diego and other areas of California in May. The 21-and-up bus, decked out in blue and yellow and outfitted with old surfboards and retro TVs inside, runs from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights through the end of July. Its route is a 45-minute loop between downtown, Mission Beach and Pacific Beach, stopping near area watering holes that feature Pacifico. In Mission Beach, the shuttle stops near Belmont Park, at Mission Boulevard and Ventura Place. There are stops in PB at Mission Boulevard and Thomas Avenue, and Garnet Avenue and Haines Avenue, and two stops downtown in the Gaslamp Quarter. Local comedian Mal Hall will be onboard to emcee the ride. For more information about Pacifico or the free shuttle bus, visit www.pacificobusroute.com. — Anthony Gentile Spreckels Organ Society presents Finnish organist DOWNTOWN — The Spreckels Organ Society will present organist Kalevi Kiviniemi from Finland in a free concert on Monday, July 26 at 7:30 p.m. at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion in Balboa Park. A prolific recording artist, Kalevi Kiviniemi has more than 100 CDs to his credit, the most of any musical artist in Finland. He has toured worldwide and played many historic instruments in the U.S., Europe, Japan and the Philippines. Admission and parking are free, music-loving children and pets are welcome and many concertgoers enjoy picnics in Balboa Park before the concerts. Light snacks, beverages and gifts are available at the pavilion grounds with proceeds benefiting the non-profit Spreckels Organ Society. King and Queen Beach VB Celebration set July 24 MISSION BAY — The King and Queen Beach Volleyball Celebration annual round robin tournament will be held Saturday, July 24 at Mariner’s Point. The event serves as a fundraiser for San Diego BIG (Beach Improvement Group), and is open to all skill levels ages 14 and older. There will be eight divisions from professional to social. Check in is at 8 a.m. and play begins at 9 a.m. The final playoff rounds are expected to begin at 2 p.m. Domino’s Pizza will be on hand to serve lunch and players eat for free. Spectators are welcome and encouraged to attend the event and may purchase pizza for a recommended $5 donation. Comic-Con Masquerade in its 36th year DOWNTOWN — What started as a simple costume party at Comic-Con 36 years ago is now referred to as the Comic-Con Masquerade. It takes place on a stage in front of an audience of 4,200, filling the convention center’s ballroom to capacity. It is also streamed to large video screens throughout the downtown facility and is a talent competition before a panel of judges. Trophies and cash prizes will be awarded. Some entrants compete solo and others enter as a team under a shared theme. In keeping with Comic-Con tradition, some dress as TV or movie characters while others get creative and present their own design. Some of the participants will compete for are best re-creation, best original design, best workmanship, most humorous and most beautiful. The event takes place Saturday, July 24 at 8:30 p.m. For more information visit www.comic-con.org —Debbie Hatch Multimedia concert set at the Civic Theatre DOWNTOWN — Video Games Live presents a multimedia concert pulling from scores of classical music within video games Saturday, July 24, 8 p.m. at the Civic Theatre. The event will debut the release of “End of Nations” by composer Frank Klepecki who also composed “Guitar Hero: Van Halen.” This will also showcase video footage of the games to correspond to the music being played. It will be a full multimedia show including synchronized special effects. During the show guests will be randomly selected to go on up stage and compete against other video game players while the orchestra music synchronizes to their game.
