La Jolla Community Center to hold ukulele classes, voice lessons and more

Ukulele classes will be held on Monday for four weeks from 2-3 p.m. starting July 1 at the La Jolla Community Center, 6811 La Jolla Blvd. Learn to play the ukulele with instructor James Clarkston, who will teach all level students to play classic rock, pop, jazz, country and classical music on the ukulele in a group setting. The class includes a music book and all levels are welcome. Cost is $80 for members; $90 for non-members.
Voice Lessons for Beginners will be held from 2:30-3:30 p.m., on July 11, 18 and 25 at the La Jolla Community Center, 6811 La Jolla Blvd. Enjoy weekly, semi-private voice lessons that are designed to be simple and fun. The class will have a maximum of five students. Instructor Christen Horne, who has a Master’s Degree in Opera Performance, will focus on building a solid foundation, helping students learn about harmony and how to sing one, and include the basics of reading music, and more. Cost is $95 for members; $105 for non-members. Interested students can also attend one class for a drop-in cost of $35 for members and $45 for non-members. There will also be a one-time “Introduction to Singing” class on at 5:30 p.m., July 11. Cost for this class is $25 for members and $35 for non-members.
The Fourth Friday Jazz Series featuring Peter & Trip Sprague and vocalist Lisa Hightower will be held at 7 p.m., July 26 at the La Jolla Community Center, 6811 La Jolla Blvd. Guitarist Peter Sprague will dig deep into his musical history to unearth some sonic gems from the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, and Brazil’s Antonio Carlos Jobim. For this concert, he connects with vocalist Lisa Hightower who Sprague met at the Rancho Santa Fe Inn 30 years ago. She was a waitress and sat in with the band on How High the Moon. Saxophonist Tripp Sprague (Peter’s brother) plays up a storm and also doubles on flute, percussion, and chromatic harmonica. Individuals can pre-purchase tickets at a cost of $18 for members and $23 for non-members or pay $25 at the door.
