Nearly all PLHS winter-sports teams advance to playoffs

With one exception, every winter sports team at Point Loma High qualified for CIF playoffs, which began last week. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
The highest seed went to the Lady Pointers basketball team, which finished 15-8 overall (11-2 and second place in the Central League). The team’s record earned it a No. 6 seed in Div. IV and a home game earlier this week against No. 11 seed San Ysidro, which finished 8-13 overall.
Two key players, however, were lost to injuries late in the season, forcing veteran coach Dave Aros to make lineup adjustments. Quarterfinals are set for Feb. 28 with semifinals on March 4 and finals on March 7 at 11 a.m. in the Jenny Craig Pavilion at University of San Diego. BOYS’ SOCCER
The boys’ soccer team was seeded No. 10 in Div. I after finishing 9-7-5 overall (4-2-2 and second place in the Western League). The Pointers were forced to travel 122 miles to Calexico earlier this week for a match against the No. 7 seeded Bulldogs, who finished their season at 11-7-4. Quarterfinals are March 1 with semifinals on March 5. Finals are set for March 8 at 7 p.m. at Mesa College. Elliott Savitch coaches the team. GIRLS’ SOCCER
The Lady Pointers soccer team compiled a 9-9-3 overall record (4-2-2 and third place in the City League). They received a No. 11 seed in Div. I play and traveled to San Marcos to face the No. 6 seeded Knights (10-4-4 overall) earlier this week. Quarterfinals kick off Feb. 28 with semifinals on March 4 and finals on March 8 at 4:30 p.m. at Mesa College. John Murphy is the team’s head coach. GIRLS’ WATER POLO
Playoffs in girls’water polo began earlier, and the Lady Pointers (9-22 overall (1-8 and fifth place in the Eastern League) suffered a first-round loss. As Div. II’s final seed, the No. 12 Lady Pointers traveled to meet No. 5 seed Steele Canyon, which eliminated them 12-3. Gerry Rich coaches the ladies. BOYS’ BASKETBALL
Missing the playoffs was the boys’ basketball team. Last year’s squad finished 18-8 overall, winning the Central League with a perfect 10-0 mark. This year, coach Chris Brisco’s team posted a record of 10-15 overall (6-6 and third place in Central League), falling short of a spot in the Div. II playoffs. Teams like Granite Hills (7-19), Rancho Bernardo (8-18) and Mt. Carmel (8-20) did, however,  receive bids. EXTRA POINTS
• A new sport debuts as the spring athletic season gets under way: girls’ beach volleyball. Girls’ varsity volleyball coach Davis Ransom will head the program in its inaugural season. The Lady Pointers’ home court will be on Ocean Beach sand near lifeguard Tower 5 and Dog Beach.
• Spring is the busiest season for Pointer sports. The boys will be battling opponents in badminton, baseball, golf, swimming, tennis, track and field, volleyball  and lacrosse. Both the tennis and volleyball teams will be defending 2013 league championships.
• Girls’ spring sports include badminton, softball, swimming, track and field and lacrosse, in addition to the new beach volleyball team.
