For Megan Heine, hospitality is not just a career and passion — it’s a family tradition. Heine, along with her husband David, is credited for transforming the Bird Rock restaurant scene with her opening of Beaumont’s, 5662 La Jolla Blvd., a little more than five years ago. She is also celebrating 20 years of ownership at Brockton Villa, located at 1235 Coast Blvd. and housed in an 1894 coastal cottage that is part of the La Jolla Historical Society. A go-to place for homely, fine dining with a view of the La Jolla Cove, the restaurant has been part of Heine’s family since 1991 and she — only in her late 20s at the time — became the owner in 1994. Before the historic cottage was Brockton Villa, it was the well-known Pannikin Coffee & Tea (which has locations at 7467 Girard Ave. and all over San Diego County), where Heine started working at the age of 11. It’s no wonder Heine has such a deep connection to the restaurant and its customers. Even though the eatery lost money in its early years, she continued to persevere because she simply “fell in love with the business.” Things have really shaped up in recent years for Heine, a resident of Bird Rock, and much of her business success has bloomed from her desire to unite her home community — which also neighbors the Windansea neighborhood where she grew up. Megan and her husband felt a need for better dining options and a gathering place in the area, and she said it was inevitable that she would open a restaurant in Bird Rock, in addition to Brockton Villa. Beaumont’s has not only served as a popular place for day- and night-time diners, but it has even brought live music and nightlife to the community between Pacific Beach and La Jolla. The restaurant has garnered great review after great review — and not to mention, many-a-kudo at community meetings. To sum it up: the place is a great fit in the surrounding neighborhood, while still keeping to the concept of unpretentious food served in a comfortable atmosphere.
