Community briefs for Pacific Beach and Mission Beach

Water documentary at Pacific Beach Library The University of Arizona’s Water Resources Research Center director, Dr. Sharon B. Megdal, Ph.D, will be presenting a viewing of “Beyond the Mirage: The Future of Water in the West” at the Pacific Beach Library 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 1.
“Beyond the Mirage” explores the West’s water situation in detail, including how the region arrived at this point. Through interviews with noted public policy and environmental experts, the documentary puts viewers at the center of this issue and prompts candid discussion about water resources and the need for viable, sustainable solutions. The screening of the film will be followed by a question-and-answer session. Paddle out Celebration of life, potluck and paddle out for local swimming icon Anne Cleveland will take place 11 a.m. July 30 at Windansea Beach, Nautilus Street. Yoga on library lawn

More trash bins for beaches in summer San Diego beaches and bays are filled with local and out of town visitors this summer enjoying the beautiful views and perfect weather. Unfortunately, permanent trash receptacles are inundated with large amounts of litter due to this influx of beachgoers. Throughout the summer season holidays, the San Diego Clean Beach Coalition will place 200 temporary trash and recycling bins along San Diego’s most heavily-trafficked beaches: Mission Beach, Mission Bay, Pacific Beach, and Ocean Beach to alleviate overflowing receptacles and reduce marine debris.
Not only is marine debris an eyesore, it also poses a serious health threat to local wildlife and negatively impacts water quality. Since the SDCBC’s inception in 2007, these temporary bins have collected an impressive 3.3 million pounds of trash which is the equivalent of three Boeing 747 airplanes. The SDCBC bins make proper disposal the easy and convenient choice while everyone enjoys their time seaside. Hivoral joins CDC Small Business Finance
Ray Hivoral, of Pacific Beach, has been hired by CDC Small Business Finance to coach and advise small businesses owners seeking and securing financing to grow their companies. A long-time small business advisor, Hivoral will help small businesses overcome challenges to getting a loan and then provide ongoing coaching once funding is provided.  Specifically, Hivoral will be tasked with assisting minority-, women- and veteran-owned small businesses who have struggled to obtain financing via traditional channels. San Diego Bike Coalition names advocacy coordinator The San Diego Bike Coalition, the only countywide organization advocating for the rights of all people on bikes, recently announced Daniela Trujillo as its bicycle advocacy coordinator. With a background in urban planning, Trujillo brings an understanding of the importance of bike lanes and a passion for the education and advocacy it takes to make a city bike-friendly.
