U.S. News and World Report ranks UC San Diego in top 10 in nation

The U.S. News and World Report Best Colleges Guidebook recently ranked the University of California San Diego as the nation’s 10th best public university — up two spots compared to last year.

The guidebook also features a new ranking this year, “Top Performers for Social Mobility,” which named the campus 14th among U.S. public colleges. The category is based on how many low-income students enroll and their average graduation rate.

The publication also touted the campus’ Jacobs School of Engineering, which was named 11th among public engineering schools that offer doctorates.

“UC San Diego’s broad academic strength, focus on collaborative learning and multidisciplinary problem-solving, and determination to expand access to higher education continue to draw national and international attention,” said Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla. “Our commitment to ensuring all students thrive once on campus continues to bring new opportunities for students to connect with peers in meaningful ways, actively engage in research, and impact the local community through service. As a student-centered, research-focused, service-oriented public university, UC San Diego has become a preferred destination for high-achieving students from diverse backgrounds.”

When preparing students to become global leaders, civility is essential. Leaders for all UC San Diego student organizations are required to take “The Art of Inclusive Communication,” a three-hour workshop designed to help students learn and practice key communication techniques, focus on inclusive communication skill-building and understand and practice conflict resolution. This program is part of the Galinson/Glickman Campus Civility Program at UC San Diego, a partnership between the National Conflict Resolution Center (NCRC) and UC San Diego.

In addition, programs like the university’s CREATE (the Center for Research on Educational Equity, Assessment and Teaching Excellence) have benefited students on campus and in the community for more than 20 years by working with our region’s educators and youth to help build real-life connections that support kids’ dreams of college and career. Through the program, both undergraduate and graduate students gain hands-on, service-learning experience through engaging with and tutoring local K-12 students.
