Outdoor movies come to La Jolla Cove

With beautiful summer weather in La Jolla, what better place to hold outdoor movie events?
To take advantage of the Jewel by the Sea’s beautiful location, La Jolla Parks & Recreation Inc. and Promote La Jolla are happy to announce “2008 Movies by the Sea” to be held Friday nights at Ellen Browning Scripps Park at La Jolla Cove at 8:30 p.m.
The first movie to be shown on Friday, Aug. 1 is the smash hit baseball epic “Field of Dreams” (1989) starring Kevin Costner. The famous line from this film is “Build it and they will come,” referring to a baseball diamond.
When Iowa farmer Ray Kinsella (Costner) hears somebody whispering in his ear to build the playing field, he interprets it to mean that the ghosts of Shoeless Joe Jackson (Ray Liotta) and the seven other Chicago White Sox players banned from the game for throwing the 1919 World Series will come and play. Amy Madigan, Timothy Busfield, James Earl Jones and Burt Lancaster co-star. Ben Affleck and Matt Damon appear as extras at Fenway Park. Universal Pictures.
“Shrek” (2001) shows up on the 40-by-40-foot screen on Friday, Aug. 8. This is the original “Shrek” movie and stars the voices of Mike Meyers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz, John Lithgow and veteran actress Kathleen Freeman.
Shrek (Meyers) is a big green ogre who lives alone in the woods. When his swamp is invaded by cute fairytale creatures in a nefarious scheme by the dastardly Lord Farquaad (John Lithgow), he seeks revenge. Shrek makes a deal to rescue Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz) and bring her back to be Farquaad’s bride. But Fiona has a secret later revealed to Shrek that changes both their lives. Murphy is hysterically funny as a sidekick donkey to Shrek. DreamWorks Animation.
The movies are free and will be preceded by a local community music performance. Bring a picnic, a blanket and your whole family. This year’s movies are underwritten by Council President Scott Peters’ office and County Supervisor Pam Slater-Price’s Community Enhancement Fund.
