
The swim teams at La Jolla High have been sinking the competition in recent weeks.
The La Jolla High boys dominated against Cathedral Catholic High School in a meet April 2, scoring a 107-76 victory.
Double winners included Tyler Woods (junior) in the 50 freestyle (22.64) and 100 freestyle (49.95) and Hunter Gettlefinger (junior) in the 200 freestyle (1:53.23) and 100 backstroke (58.56). The boys also won the 200 freestyle relay and 200 medley, and came in second in the 400 freestyle relay.
Swimming strong were Alex Polyak (sophomore) coming in second in the 100 breaststroke (1:07:16), Miko Vespremi (junior) third in the 50 freestyle (23:22) and 100 freestyle (52:56), and Augie Arcidiacono (junior) who came in second in the 200 individual medley (2:11.36).
Sweeping the butterfly event were Jimmy McCarthy (junior), who came in first with a personal best 100 butterfly (58.87), followed by Donald Rayner (senior) second (1:01.09) and Connor Robbins (sophomore) in third (1:03.98).
The La Jolla High dive team also dominated, with Kirk Lee (freshman) placing first, Kimball Wing (sophomore) in second and Andrew Dowley (freshman) third.
While the La Jolla High girls team fell 127-59, several swimmers turned in top performances.
Grace Benefield (junior) placed second in the 200 freestyle (2:00.05) and second in the 500 free (5:20.67). Sprinters Kelly Wahl (senior), Sami McLaughlin (junior) and Kate Woods (sophomore) also had a good showing.
Third-place finishers include Havyne Cooper (junior), 100 butterfly; Laura Cummings (senior), 100 backstroke; and Sara Ashcraft (freshman), 100 breaststroke.
La Jolla opened league action recently with wins over neighboring University City High.
The Lady Vikings had great swims by Wahl (senior) in the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle, Kayla Horner (junior) in the 200 individual medley and the 100 breaststroke and Benefield (junior) in the 200 freestyle and the 500 freestyle. All the girls relays won, with the freestyle relays being anchored by Wahl.
The boys also had a great showing, with top performers Woods (junior) swimming in the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle, Gettelfinger (junior) in the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke and Robbins (junior) in the 500 freestyle. Also swimming strong were Daniel Diercks (junior) in the 100 breast and Hunter Brown (senior) in the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke.
La Jolla also made a strong showing at the recent Mt. Carmel Invitational, with the boys finishing in fourth place. Gettelfinger, Woods, Vesprimi and Arcidiacono set a meet record in the 200 free relay and Woods won the 100 freestyle.
