GO NORTH, YOUNG MAN
La Jolla eighth-grader David Larson (red hat, front) competes March 16 at Newport Harbor Yacht Club.
David won the North Perpetual Trophy at the crowning event of the North Series, a year-long effort involving SoCal’s top junior sailors.
There were 27 races since September, with the finals hard-fought in rough waters.
Only three sailors from San Diego have won the trophy since 2000.

LJCD sluggers go to 5-1
The La Jolla Country Day School baseball team raised its record to 5-1 last week and captured the Christian Patriot Tournament. The tournament title was LJCD’s first in a decade.
LJCD scored wins over Santa Fe Christian (6-5), Christian (16-1), Mt. Empire (10-5), Hoover (7-4) and a win over Serra (8-4) in the title game. The only loss was a 5-4 loss in its first meeting with Serra.
In the championship game, LJCD jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the fourth, capped by a three-run home run by senior Tommy Morris. Greg Wisenberg threw very well in his first extended outing of the season (five innings, 65 pitches).
Serra crept back into the game with a run in the fourth and another in the fifth. They scored two more in the seventh, but Zack Campbell shut the door and earned the save.
Wisenberg, who recorded his 19th career varsity victory, earned two wins in the tournament, including the championship game.
Senior Kyle Reese is hitting .600 and earned a win on the mound. Finally, Campbell hit .500 in the tournament and earned a win and a save.

Pepperdine teams meet in Pac Coast Doubles
The La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club hosted the 119th annual USTA Pacific Coast Men’s Doubles Championship Feb. 28 through March 2. This year marked the 66th consecutive year that the club has hosted the tournament.
The field featured a combination of independent and college doubles teams. In addition to national NCAA powers such as Rice and Stanford, local schools also participated in the tournament, including San Diego State and UC San Diego.
The finals featured two teams from Pepperdine. In the March 2 match, the team of Omar Altmann and Andre Begemann defeated the team of Bassam Beidas and James Lemke 3-6, 6-2, 6-4.

Both USD hoops teams go mad this March
The University of San Diego (USD) campus has been buzzing.
For the first time in the school’s history, USD is completely caught up in March madness. This year, both the men’s and women’s teams are in the Big Dance in the same season. The NCAA Tournament commonly known as March Madness begins today.
Both teams earned an automatic bid into the tournament by winning the WCC Tournament held at USD’s Jenny Craig Pavilion. The women’s team defeated Gonzaga 70-66 Sunday, March 9, and the men’s team defeated the Bulldogs 69-62 in the men’s title game the following night.
The No. 13 seed Toreros (21-13) will face No. 4 seed Connecticut (24-8) in the first round Friday at the St. Pete Times Forum in Tampa, Fla. Tipoff is scheduled for approximately noon PST.
Should the Toreros defeat the Huskies, they will face the winner of Friday’s game between No. 5 seed Drake (28-4) and No. 12 seed Western Kentucky (27-6) on Sunday at either 9:10 or 11:40 a.m. The winner of that game will advance to the West regional.
