Netters ace winning records to date
Some local scholastic girls tennis teams have served up a number of victories to date.
At La Jolla High School, the Lady Vikings come into play this week for head coach Maggie Mulkins at 5-1.
Key players to date are Lexi Provancha, Hannah Holladay, Lacy McGill, Alexi Archambault, Jenna Essakow and Amanda Lin.
“We had an excellent match with Cathedral, winning by only two,” Mulkins said. “We hope to continue with our winning record and win the Western League title.”
At The Bishop’s School, head coach Jose Ruelas and the Lady Knights entered this week at 8-2, with their only losses to Westview and San Dieguito Academy.
“We’re currently 5-1 in the Coastal League and have a tough second half, with matches against La Jolla High and Cathedral,” Ruelas said. “In addtion, we’ll be trying to avenge our loss against San Dieguito this Thursday (Oct. 4).”
Ruelas noted players doing well are Kimmi Cox and Elizabeth Alexander in singles. In addition, Bianca Pham is a good surprise. The doubles teams of Sarah Peluso and Jameson Kearney, along with Lila Abed and Pati Guinea, are having nice seasons.
“We really need to start winning some of the close sets and finish sets when we have a nice lead in order to challenge for a Coastal League and Division III title,” Ruelas added.
In other Coastal League play last week, Canyon Crest posted an 11-7 win over La Jolla Country Day School.

Lady Vikings harriers see action at Stanford
The La Jolla High girls cross-country team traveled this past Saturday to the prestigious Stanford Invitational.
The Lady Vikings placed 15th out of 38 teams, with five of the top six at some various stages of being ill.
“Being healthy, obviously, we would have done much better,” La Jolla High head girls cross-country coach Roger Karnopp said. “This race had the best Division III teams from the Southern section up through the Northern sections of the state, plus some teams from out of state.”
La Jolla was led by Tess Plant-Thomas (16th), Courtney Avvampato, Nihal Kayali, Callan Parra, Jenine Mejares, Maegan Bautista and Tatevik Simavoryan.
“Considering their health, I believe they did a great job,” Karnopp added.
