SUMMER’S GLOW
Rancho Penasquitos Boy Scouts and their families gather at La Jolla Shores Aug. 26 to enjoy a bonfire at sunset.
Although the calendar says one more week until fall’s arrival, the ocean temperature has recently plunged and the coast is again bathed in cool breezes after a week-long heat spell around Labor Day.

Ex-coach enters not-guilty plea in sex case
A former La Jolla Country Day School basketball coach pleaded not guilty Monday, Sept. 10 to six counts of committing unlawful sexual intercourse with a 17-year-old girl who attended the school.
Cesar Don Juan Flores, 26, was ordered to stay away from the victim and her family by San Diego Superior Court Judge David Szumowski at the request of Deputy District Attorney Terrie Roberts.
The judge allowed Flores to remain free on $60,000 bond he posted after his Aug. 27 arrest.
Flores was not a teacher. He was the assistant coach of a boys basketball team, but he no longer works there since his arrest.
There are no allegations of force in any of the charges. Because the girl is still a minor, consent is not an issue, but her age at the time is.
The judge set a Nov. 14 preliminary hearing in which the girl may have to testify.
If Flores is found guilty, he could face a maximum of six years in state prison.
Flores is represented by attorney Robert Grimes.

Classic car crashes, kills passenger
A member of an Arizona car club that was making its yearly “cruise” from Carlsbad to Coronado lost control of a classic T-Bucket car, slamming into a bus stop at a La Jolla intersection, killing a passenger and seriously injuring the driver.
Rolando Daniel Nenninger , 57, of Tucson, Ariz., died Saturday, Sept. 8 when he was ejected from the classic car he was riding in, said an investigator with the County Medical Examiner’s Office.
The driver, not yet identified, lost control of the classic T-Bucket car around 2 p.m., at the intersection of North Torrey Pines Road at La Jolla Shores Drive, while on his way to the 101 cafe, said Detective Suzie Huntington of the San Diego Police Department, Traffic Division.
The car slammed into an empty bus stop and caused a gas leak, shutting down the intersection for several hours until crews could contain the leak, police said.
Neither alcohol nor racing are thought to be factors in the accident, which ejected both the driver and the passenger from the car.
The car did not have seatbelts but was not required to by law, Huntington said.
The driver is in the hospital with serious injuries, Huntington said.

SeaWorld to collect e-waste
Shamu wants your old TV and any other electronic junk collecting dust around the house.
SeaWorld is collecting electronic waste, or e-waste, such as televisions, cell phones and microwave ovens, for recycling Saturday, Sept. 15, from 8 a.m. to noon in the park’s east parking lot on SeaWorld Drive.
Because many electronic items contain lead, mercury or cadmium, e-waste should be recycled rather than discarded into landfills.
The free recycling event is open to all California residents. Proof of residency is required.
Participants will receive a coupon for $10 off general admission at SeaWorld for up to six people, and a $10 gift card for Lowe’s (limit one card per car).
SeaWorld will accept computers and monitors, televisions, VCRs, PDAs, cell phones, fax machines, photocopiers, mp3 players, stereo equipment, calculators, speakers, telephones, laptops, keyboards, CRT screens and microwaves and more.
Unacceptable electronics include batteries, any items containing mercury, florescent light bulbs, washers and dryers, refrigerators and other large household appliances.
