Cabrillo Rec Center sports plenty of summer fun

The Cabrillo Recreation Center, located at 3051 Canon St., has an extensive summer program for children ages 5 to 12 called the “Summer Daze Camp” from June 20 to Aug. 30. The program was established a decade ago by camp director Walter Heyward.
“Our camp offers a variety of recreational experiences including sports, arts and crafts, games and field trips and is a very positive experience,” said Ruby Houck, the center’s director.
One of the upcoming field trips will be to Knott’s Berry Farm’s Soak City in Chula Vista.
“We were able to rent a bus for 165 kids. We will also be going to Knott’s Berry Farm, the movies and going Downtown to the Hornblower Cruise, the USS Midway, a puppet show and also trips to the Wild Animal Park and The Plunge,” Houck said.
In addition to program events, the recreation center has a van that will pick up and drop off children to and from the various extracurricular events.
“We have this girl named Natalie who attends the camp, and she takes piano lessons,” Houck said. “So we’ll bring her over to that and will bring her back as well so that she gets to her lesson on time.”
Despite the name “Summer Daze,” the programs also run through the school year, and recreation center officials help children get to and from the various schools in the area.
“We’ll drive them or walk them over there,” Houck said. “We have a good, well-managed staff that is very on top of things and well-screened. We think it is important for parents to know that they can trust us with taking care of the most valuable possession ” their children.”
The camp runs Mondays through Fridays from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. The program costs $35 for one day, $45 for two, $65 for three, $85 for four and $105 for all five days. Because of its popularity, there is a waiting list of about 30 names, Houck said.
